Eventually, we’ll also use this space to take a look at what’s hot at the box office and let you know what’s coming to cinemas the following weekend.

The News

Space Cruise

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise has a director aboard for his space movie; that is planned to be shot in space! Doug Liman, who directed Cruise on Edge Of Tomorrow and American Made, has also written the script for the unnamed movie. NASA and SpaceX are involved with the project and it is hoped filming will take place on the International Space Station. Cruise is famously a bit of a daredevil who does as many of his own stunts as possible; this would seem to take that to another level.

Cavill to Supe Up Again?

Sounds like Henry Cavill may be dusting off his outfit for another outing as Superman. While he has never officially left the role there haven’t been any stand-alone or team-ups in the works so his future in the DC universe was unclear. Now it looks like Superman will pop up in a supporting role in another DC movie, potentially Shazam 2 or Aquaman 2.

Cut Cut Cut

You’ve probably heard that the Snyder Cut of Justice League is coming in 2021. After Zack Snyder left the film in tragic circumstances Joss Whedon stepped in to finish it. Now, after a campaign, we’ll finally see Snyder’s vision, which has had plenty of vocal support from the stars of the film. It’s created plenty of publicity for the new streaming service HBO Max which will air it. In what form though? Four-hour movie or multi-part series? We await more info.

This might open the floodgates for similar offerings. Immediately there was talk of a new cut of Suicide Squad. Director David Ayer openly supported the idea on twitter, saying his film “got the Edward Scissorhands treatment”. With James Gunn’s sequel due next year, it could be the perfect time.

Even better, a petition was launched to release the four-hour cut of Revenge Of The Sith, despite no acknowledgement that such a thing exists. It’s still racked up thousands of signatures from Star Wars fans, presumably desperate to see more of Anakin’s descent to the dark side.

Sonic Movie Gets A Sequel

Sonic skateboarding

It had some trouble getting to the big screen, mostly due to Sonic’s design, but it apparently did well enough that a sequel is a go. That must have been hoped for; given the hint in the mid-credits scene but now it’s official. The first movie’s director Jeff Fowler will return as will the screenwriters. There’s no word on the cast yet though.

Gosling to be The Wolfman

Ryan Gosling is attached to star as The Wolfman for Universal. It’s the latest in a number of horror/monster movies they are working on. The studio has been trying to get their ‘dark universe’ going for ages. Their planned interconnected series was quickly abandoned after the Tom Cruise-starring The Mummy flopped. Instead, they decided to focus on standalone movies and they will no doubt want to push on quickly after the success of the brilliant The Invisible Man.

Blockbuster Filming Resumes

James Cameron and 50 plus members of his crew have arrived in New Zealand to get going on Avatar 2. There’s some controversy around it, given how strict New Zealand has been about the lockdown and who they allow into the country. Now they’re in, the crew will be quarantined for 14 days before they can commence filming. The film is due at the end of 2021, over 12 years since Avatar was released.

Upcoming

With no cinema listings at present, here’s the newest TV spot from Tenet, which is stubbornly clinging onto a mid-July release date
