Welcome to the TV and movie edition of our new weekly round-ups. In this new FinalBoss feature we’ll bring you bitesize chunks of the latest news from the TV and movie worlds. It will all in be in one place, allowing you to catch up on anything you’ve missed without endless searching!  Eventually, we’ll also use this space to take a look at what’s hot at the box office and let you know what’s coming to cinemas the following weekend.

The News

TV Talk

  • Are the BAFTA TV Awards a thing that people care about? I’m not convinced they are but to be honest I have space to fill and not a lot of news. Chernobyl, The Crown, Giri/Haji and Fleabag lead the nominations.

Chernobyl Title Card

  • Speaking of Chernobyl, some of the creative team are reuniting to work on the HBO adaptation of The Last Of Us video game. It was already known that Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin was involved in the show with game writer Neil Druckman. It has now been announced that Johan Renck, who directed five episodes of Chernobyl, will direct the pilot.
  • Jon Favreau said this week that season 2 of The Mandalorian is progressing well. Speaking at the virtual Austin Television Festival he said filming had finished before lockdown and the post-production work has been carried out remotely. This means it’s on course to hit Disney + in October.
  • At the same event, Deborah Chow said that the planned Obi-Wan Kenobi series was still in development. Having directed episodes of The Mandalorian Chow will do the same on Kenobi.

Jeremy Renner as Marvel's Hawkeye

  • Over on the Marvel side of Disney HQ, the Hawkeye series has a working title of Anchor Point. This is close to the name of a comic book run called Anchor Points and a reference to the position on an archers face to which they draw back their bow. Who knows if it sticks but I think that’s a terrible title!
  • Meanwhile at Netflix, there’s optimism that filming on season 2 of The Witcher will soon be able to resume. Even better for those who enjoyed but were often confused by the first season; showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has said it will be much more linear!

At The Movies

  • Film and TV productions can resume filming in California from June 12th provided they meet strict criteria. They will need approval from local public health officers. Like many other businesses, they will also have to adhere to protocols to ensure work is carried out in as Covid-19 secure way as possible.
  • One movie that has gone into production is Spider-man Into The Spiderverse 2. The first entry was one of the most loved films of recent years so the sequel will have a lot to live up to; the lead animator tweeted that work has begun

  • Ridley Scott can’t seem to let Alien go. Disney now has the rights and Scott says he’s interested in making another instalment, it would be his fourth entry in the series he started in 1979.

Studio Ghibli Logo

  • Studio Ghibli’s first film since 2014 will be released later this year and directed by Goro Miyazaki, son of Hayao. Aya and The Witch will be the first film produced in 3-D CG. It’s based on the book, Earwig and The Witch by Diana Wynne-Jones. That’s a good sign because the same author wrote the fantasy Howl’s Moving Castle which inspired Ghibli’s movie of the same name and is, in my opinion, the studios best film.

Upcoming

If you missed it at the cinema, or you’re just desperate to see it again, you’ll be thrilled to know that Frozen II is coming to Disney + UK earlier than originally planned. You’ll be able to watch it from July 3rd. If you can’t wait that long, or you want a physical copy for your collection, it’s already available on Blu-Ray and DVD.

There’s obviously still no cinema listings at present but we do have a trailer!
