Abiotic Factor: How Paint and the Cauldron Work – Spoiler-Light

Paint entered Abiotic Factor through an October 2024 update, but the Cauldron’s purpose stayed deliberately narrow: it is a deployable container for Ink and a customizable colored light for your base. What Goes in the Cauldron?

Ink goes in the Cauldron, not water. The object is built to store Ink, a distinct liquid resource. Filling it with ordinary water or treating it like a general cooking pot will not produce the documented colored-light effect.

The Cauldron works as a transfer point. You collect Ink in a liquid container such as a bucket or barrel, then empty that container into the placed Cauldron using the game’s secondary-interact function. An empty liquid container can also draw Ink back out of a filled Cauldron with the normal interact function, letting you move the liquid between storage and decorative setups. How Paint and Brushes Change the Cauldron

For the Cauldron, the important item is a colored brush. Use a brush with a color on a Cauldron that already contains Ink, and that brush color is applied to the Ink. The filled Cauldron then emits a bright glow matching the selected color.

That is the full verified mechanical payoff: colored Ink for ambient light, themed rooms, or multi-Cauldron displays. • Ink + colored brush: creates a matching colored glow.
• Ink without a colored brush: stores Ink, but does not receive a custom glow color.
• Painted or colored Ink: remains decorative; it has no verified buffs, debuffs, skill effects, or quest use.

The Common Trap: It Is Not a Cooking Station

The name and shape make the Cauldron look like it should support soups, alchemy, or other survival recipes. Those functions belong to the separate cooking system and its cooking pots, which handle recipes such as chowders, stews, soups, and other food. This also means there is no progression penalty for ignoring it. A Cauldron becomes worthwhile once you want colored lighting or a specific base aesthetic; it is safe to leave it unused while you focus on core survival and advancement.

Spoiler-Adjacent: Where to Find Ink

Ink is associated with the Night Realm, an area reached through later progression involving teleportation and moisture-teleporter systems. A large Ink pool is found there, so the Cauldron’s intended use is naturally gated beyond the early game. No coordinates or route details are needed: once that area is available, the Ink source is a recognizable environmental resource.

• Bring Ink in a compatible liquid container; standard water is not the intended input.
