Afterworld’s key design change is its starting scale: players begin by securing food, water, and shelter for a small survivor group, then attempt to turn that foothold into a continent-spanning empire. That makes the game less about selecting a finished nation and more about managing the unstable systems that create one.
Paradox Interactive formally unveiled the game at gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, 2026, after its existence surfaced early through material exposed on Paradox’s own web infrastructure. The announcement settles the leak’s central claim: Afterworld is in development at Paradox Development Studio, the team behind Crusader Kings III and Hearts of Iron IV, and is coming to PC. No release date, price, system requirements, or console version has been announced.
The setting is an original, procedurally generated North America of hazardous terrain, old-world ruins, and isolated human settlements. Exploration is tied to progression through an Ideas Tree rather than a conventional fixed technology race. Finding a river can unlock irrigation; meeting a religious tribe can open an organized-religion idea. The premise is that pre-collapse knowledge survives in fragments, including technology powerful enough to threaten the new civilization being built.

Campaign pressure extends beyond expansion. Players negotiate trade, establish convoys and supply lines, manage wasteland settlements, and fight wars of conquest. Origins, prologues, and formative Traumas establish early resources and priorities, while moral crises cover choices such as rationing, emerging religions, and dealings with mutated or augmented people. One disclosed origin, the Shelterfolk, begins with a group pushed into cannibalism during a lean season and susceptible to demagoguery.
The comparison to Fallout fits the ruins and scavenging; Crusader Kings is the more useful mechanical reference, given the emphasis on tribe identity, political struggle, ideology, and long-form growth. “Ancients” — immortal pre-collapse leaders using forgotten technology — add another power bloc, though their precise role remains undisclosed. Vehicle combat is not yet confirmed as a core system despite the trailer’s wasteland aesthetic.
For now, prospective players should treat Afterworld as a survival-to-empire strategy game and wait for Paradox to clarify map generation, multiplayer scope, and the combat systems before drawing firmer conclusions.
