Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Amazon just quietly restocked its Mirror Edition of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 for PS5 and Xbox Series X, and that’s worth noting even if you don’t collect boxed editions. This isn’t just another reprint: it’s a snapshot of how a surprise indie hit’s physical run, award season chaos and an AI kerfuffle collide to make finding a copy more annoying – and, for collectors, potentially expensive.
If you want a physical PS5 copy of Clair Obscur right now, Amazon is the only place with stock you can actually buy without waiting on a reprint or hunting reseller marketplaces. The Mirror Edition — a $60 packaged collector’s set — includes the game, an exclusive steelbook showing Verso and Alicia, three collectible art cards (out of a 10-card series), and a mirror-style tuck box with new artwork. That’s the same price Amazon is charging for the standard PS5 edition, which is oddly marked as “temporarily out of stock” but still orderable.
Xbox players have it easier: the standard Xbox physical edition is available at $50 in multiple retailers. Steam keys are even cheaper on PC via Fanatical at around $36. GameStop’s $70 Lumiere Edition — which bundled a hardcover art book and DLC — has also sold through its reprints, leaving most of the PS5-exclusive premium options empty-handed for now.

Sandfall Interactive’s debut turned into a bigger success than anyone expected. The game currently sits in the 90s on Metacritic territory and grabbed major end-of-year accolades — which always turbocharges demand for physical editions. Smaller studios don’t print huge runs up front to avoid overstock, so when a surprise hit catches on during awards season, the usual result is a scramble. PS5 shortages are simply the endpoint of that mismatch between supply and sudden demand.
Here’s the part that complicates the fan narrative: Sandfall disclosed that generative AI was used in development as a tooling step and that “temporary placeholder textures” accidentally remained in the April launch build. Those placeholders reportedly did not ship in the current publicly distributed version, but The Indie Game Awards retroactively disqualified Clair Obscur for breaking rules around generative AI. That revoked two awards: Best Debut Indie Game and Game of the Year.

That doesn’t erase the Game Awards’ recognition or the game’s player praise. But it does raise real questions about process transparency and standards for indie competitions. As a gamer, I’m more interested in whether the final product respects players and creators — the gameplay, writing and balance — than in whether a temporary texture snuck into an April build. Still, the retroactive disqualification is a cautionary tale: studios need airtight build hygiene and clear documentation if they want to safely play in award circuits while experimenting with AI-assisted workflows.
If you’re a collector: buy the Mirror Edition now if you value the steelbook and the display box — and accept you’ll need multiple purchases (or trading) to chase all 10 art cards. If you’re a player who just wants to play: pick the cheapest platform — PC keys are the best value at the moment. If you’re a retailer watcher: expect more small reprints targeted at PS5 collectors, or higher prices on resale markets.

Amazon’s restock gives collectors a short-lived relief, but PS5 physical scarcity and an awkward AI disqualification dampen the GOTY glow. If you want a boxed PS5 copy with extras, act fast; if you want to play, PC and Xbox remain the cheaper and easier options.
