Bellwright: How to Place Stockpiles for Faster Construction

FinalBoss7 min read

A half-finished Bellwright building becomes a logistics mess when every load of wood and stone has to cross a sprawling settlement before reaching the blueprint. Put your primary Stockpile inside the construction-and-crafting core, keep its routes flat and clear, and keep wood, stone, fiber, and similar building inputs close to that hub. This reduces the local carrying distance between storage, work areas, and active building sites; Bellwright does not publish a placement speed multiplier or a tile-distance breakpoint.

The Stockpile, sometimes labelled Settlement Stockpile, is Bellwright’s general settlement storage for produced resources, food, and gear. Construction materials are drawn from settlement storage and linked storage buildings, so the useful placement question is simple: where will villagers make the same material run most often? Build around that answer instead of putting storage wherever there happens to be empty land. Stockpile reference · Buildings reference

Version scope: PC Early Access storage behaviour

This layout advice applies to Bellwright on PC in Early Access, using Stockpile and Buildings documentation maintained through February 2026. It does not rely on a patch-specific setting or an undocumented storage-capacity value. Storage rules, construction deliveries, and NPC pathing have changed during Early Access, including fixes for stockpile rules that could make items unavailable for crafting and NPCs getting stuck while harvesting construction materials. Use one compact construction hub before expanding outward

The strongest local layout starts with one primary Stockpile near the geometric centre of the area holding your most-used crafting stations and the buildings you expect to expand first. Workers commonly move through a short loop: resource node or production station, storage, then a construction blueprint. A Stockpile in the middle keeps that loop from turning into repeated cross-settlement walks with limited material stacks.

  • Centre: Primary Stockpile plus the crafting stations that repeatedly consume general materials.
  • Immediate ring: Frequently built utility structures, production buildings, and the current construction frontier.
  • Outer sides: Housing, farming, and later specialist buildings that do not need to sit inside the busiest material route.
  • Resource edge: Keep accessible resource nodes outside the building footprint so harvesting remains possible.

“Near” is deliberately a relationship rather than a number. Maintained layout guidance recommends keeping crafting close to central storage and warns that walking distance matters during early construction, but it does not define a universal number of metres, tiles, or seconds. If a builder must cross the whole camp to fetch a routine load, that building site belongs closer to the hub or needs a nearer construction-storage area. Base-building layout reference

Keep construction materials in their own nearby storage area

Wood, stone, fiber, and other recurring building resources deserve a dedicated construction-storage area close to the part of town that is still growing. This prevents your active building supply from being scattered among food, farming goods, weapons, and armour. The point is practical routing: a villager carrying construction inputs should have a short, obvious route from storage to the blueprint.

Settlement zoneWhat belongs therePlacement relationshipWhy it helps construction
Central hubPrimary Stockpile and high-use crafting stationsKeep them within the same compact, walkable coreGeneral materials and crafted inputs stay close to the busiest routes
Construction reserveWood, stone, fiber, and other building suppliesPlace beside the active expansion side of the settlementBuilders have a shorter local pickup route to new blueprints
Food and farming sideFood and farm-related storageKeep near farms and food production rather than the build frontierFood logistics remain organised without filling the construction area with unrelated goods
Housing and specialist edgeHomes and later specialised structuresPlace farther from the core when they do not need frequent material accessThe central routes remain available for crafting and regular building work

This zoning does not require every category to have an isolated Stockpile from the start. Begin with a central general-storage hub, then add a nearby construction-focused storage area when the settlement’s active build zone has moved far enough that the hub is becoming the long leg of every trip. Flat ground and open paths matter as much as the Stockpile itself

Choose flat or gently sloped ground for the hub and avoid forcing workers through cramped gaps between large structures. Clean paths give villagers a direct route from resource collection and production to storage, then from storage to blueprints. Patch #15 specifically addressed NPCs getting stuck while trying to harvest construction resources, which makes cluttered routes and blocked harvesting space a poor foundation for a permanent construction district. • Leave a clear approach from the Stockpile to the most-used crafting stations.
  • Leave an equally clear route from the Stockpile toward the settlement’s active build edge.
  • Do not place storage or other structures directly on valuable rocks, trees, or other material nodes you still need.
  • Expand one side of the hub at a time instead of placing new buildings across multiple distant corners of the settlement.

Structure placement near resource nodes has also caused problems in earlier builds, including cases involving minable rocks. Preserve the node first, then place the Stockpile beside the usable route to it rather than on top of the resource itself. A slightly longer open path is more reliable than a theoretically close route that obstructs harvesting. Changelog reference

Use the same rule at an outpost, without confusing it with deliveries

An outpost follows the same local principle: put its Stockpile close to the resource the outpost exists to gather, such as copper, iron, tin, hardwood, or a fishing spot. Keep local production and any necessary housing close enough to form a tight extraction-to-storage loop. Road placement and delivery orders affect how goods travel between settlements, but they are a separate logistics problem from the local walking distance that determines how quickly an outpost can feed its own construction work. Placement mistakes that quietly stall building work

  • Putting the Stockpile at the edge of camp: This turns every central build into a repeated haul from the perimeter.
  • Mixing construction storage with every other settlement need: Food, equipment, and raw building inputs become harder to organise around their actual work zones.
  • Building over the material source: Losing access to a nearby rock or tree undermines the convenience of placing storage beside it.
  • Chasing exact distance numbers: There is no verified placement radius, movement bonus, or construction-speed percentage to optimise around.
  • Using old storage advice without checking patch changes: Early Access updates have changed storage availability and worker delivery behaviour.

Build outward from a flat, central Stockpile-and-crafting hub, keep raw building supplies beside the active construction side, and preserve clear access to the resource nodes feeding it.
