Bellwright has no standard Tier 4 research station. Orchard and Distillery are hidden, late-game technologies that players commonly call “T4” because they sit beyond the ordinary Town Hall tech progression. Both are still tagged as Technological Age 3, and both need a quest-earned book or blueprint before they appear as research options. The latest public patch activity is dated September 7, 2026, and the September 1 hotfix did not announce a fourth tier or any changes to these unlocks in the patch notes. See the SteamDB update tracking and hotfix references.

Bellwright Has Three Normal Research Tiers
The common trap is spending time looking for a missing Tier 4 workstation. Don’t. The standard progression stops at the Town Hall’s Research Workshop. Hidden story rewards, reputation, and conquest progress are what separate Orchard and Distillery from normal Tier 3 research. The public tech-tree data still points to three normal stations, not four. See the Bellwright Wiki Tech Tree reference.
| Normal research tier | Station | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Research Desk | Tier 1 technologies |
| Tier 2 | Advanced Research Desk in the Village Hall | Tier 2 technologies and lower-tier research |
| Tier 3 | Research Workshop attached to the Town Hall | Tier 3 technologies and lower-tier research |
Build through the Town Hall stage before chasing either reward. Orchard and Distillery use late-game materials and story flags, even though some of their underlying data uses lower research-level fields. A hidden entry missing from the research screen means the quest reward has not been earned yet; it does not mean a Tier 4 station needs to be built. That part is the whole trick. Bellwright’s research UI can be clunky enough without inventing an extra bench that the game never asks you to place. The same tech-tree reference also shows that higher-tier stations can still handle eligible lower-tier research once the hidden entry exists. See the Tech Tree source.
How to Unlock Orchard Research
Orchard is the cleaner of the two unlocks on paper, even if it still hides behind late-game progression. The key point is that Orchard is not a normal tech you brute-force by waiting for a node to appear. It is a hidden entry tied to quest and progression flags. The checklist below sticks to what the game data and quest listings actually support. See the Orchard data and quest documentation.

- Reach the late Town Hall progression. Orchard is a hidden Technological Age 3 entry, so it belongs at the end of the normal town-development path rather than in an earlier village setup.
- Raise reputation to 100. Orchard’s tech data lists a 100 reputation requirement, which is a bigger gate than Distillery’s.
- Keep advancing conquest content. The Orchard entry is flagged as unlocking through conquering, so reputation alone is not enough to expose it.
- Complete the Pious Rewards questline. The public quest listing ties Orchard to the Wine Shrine route involving Borke Sterle.
- Use the Orchard book or blueprint to expose the tech entry. “Book” and “blueprint” are the practical same thing here: they flip the hidden research node into something your workshop can actually see.
- Assign an Apprentice Carpenter and pay the research cost. Orchard research takes 1 minute 40 seconds and costs 15 Cob, 20 Hardwood Plank, 20 Iron Nails, and 10 Leather.
Finish the full Pious Rewards chain rather than treating the first shrine interaction like a victory screen. The reward is tied to quest completion and the progression flag behind it. Once research is done, the Orchard lets your settlement grow trees for fruit and other orchard crops. Its workers use the basic Dig action with a Shovel and the Cut action with a Tree Cutting tool, which is a funny Bellwright detail: the building itself is late-game, but the daily labor around it still leans on base-tier tools. See the Orchard page and the Quests page.
How to Unlock Distillery Research
Distillery is the messier unlock, mostly because the strongest verified information gives you the big gate but not a perfectly universal one-line trigger. The safe version is simple: Distillery is a hidden, conditional reward tied to the late-game Halmare Isles storyline. Public quest documentation associates it with Blue Sky. Community notes add more branch detail, but those player-reported specifics should not be treated like a guaranteed script for every save. See the Distillery data, quest documentation, and community route notes.
- Advance into the Maiden Voyage and Halmare Isles storyline. Distillery is a conditional story reward tied to this late-game content rather than a generic tech-tree purchase.
- Follow the Blue Sky-associated quest path. The public quest listing connects Distillery to Blue Sky, involving Cecilio Baez and Baltasar Blanco.
- Treat the Alchemist outcome as a player-documented route, not a universal rule. Community notes tie one Distillery reward path to letting the Alchemist go during Blue Sky, but that branch detail is best used as a recovery hint, not as the only confirmed method.
- Meet the research thresholds after the blueprint unlocks. Distillery requires 40 reputation, 45 Coins, and 4 Insurgency Points, which are separate from the material cost.
- Assign an Apprentice Carpenter and provide the research materials. The research takes 1 minute 40 seconds and costs 15 Cob, 10 Hardwood Plank, 15 Iron Nails, and 5 Copper Ingots.
Distillery is used to refine produce into ale and wine. Its data is a little weird, which is part of why players keep calling these buildings Tier 4 even though the game does not. Distillery is listed as Technological Age 3, but it also carries a Research Level 2 field in public data. That label is not evidence of a secret fourth research bench. It only means Bellwright is doing Bellwright things with hidden progression data again. Have Town Hall progression in place, then use the research station that displays the unlocked entry; higher-tier stations can still research eligible lower-tier technologies. See the Distillery reference and Tech Tree reference.

Books, Blueprints, and the Hidden-Tech Rule
Neither building is unlocked by collecting generic research points until a normal node appears. The quest reward is the real key step. Orchard’s Pious Rewards path provides its book or blueprint, while Distillery is tied to Halmare Isles progression and the Blue Sky-associated route. After obtaining that reward, you still need the listed reputation, worker profession, materials, and, for Distillery, the extra Coins and Insurgency Points before research can begin. If the entry still does not show up, the missing piece is almost always story progress, not research furniture. See the Orchard source, Distillery source, and Tech Tree source.
There is also a player-documented post-campaign route called Old Tomes that can lead to a Distillery blueprint through the Cragkeep Archives. That is useful context if your campaign has gone sideways, but it should be treated as a possible recovery path rather than a guaranteed standard unlock. Publicly available documentation does not establish it as a universal replacement for the Halmare Isles and Blue Sky progression. The same goes for modded setups that reveal Orchard and Distillery after Farm research; those overrides are not part of default Bellwright progression. See the community route notes.
If Orchard or Distillery Is Still Missing
- Do not build extra Research Desks. There is no normal Tier 4 research station to unlock these entries.
- Check the relevant questline first. Orchard is tied to Pious Rewards and Wine Shrine progression; Distillery is tied to the Halmare Isles storyline and its associated reward path.
- Check Orchard reputation. Its requirement is 100, which is a much steeper gate than Distillery’s 40.
- Keep conquest progress moving for Orchard. Its hidden tech entry is explicitly flagged for conquering-based unlock progression.
- Check the worker assignment. Both research projects list Apprentice Carpenter as the required profession.
- Check the extra Distillery costs. Distillery also asks for Coins and Insurgency Points, not only building materials.
- Do not assume every community fix is universal. Blue Sky branch details and Old Tomes archive methods are useful notes, but they are not stronger than the core storyline gate.
- Recheck update chatter against actual patch notes. The recent hotfixes cover bugs and technical issues, not a hidden fourth research tier.
Practical Takeaway
For Orchard, prioritize Pious Rewards, 100 reputation, and conquest progress. For Distillery, push the Halmare Isles storyline, then prepare for the Blue Sky-associated unlock path and the extra 45 Coins plus 4 Insurgency Points shown in the data. Once the book or blueprint reveals the hidden node, an Apprentice Carpenter can finish the short research timer with the required late-game materials. The short version is still the correct version: do not hoard resources for a nonexistent Tier 4 workstation.
