BOULDER DASH® 40th Anniversary Edition
Boulder Dash is one of those names you don’t forget if you grew up with home computers in the 80s. When BBG Entertainment dropped news of the 40th Anniversary Edition, I can’t deny I got that pang of nostalgia-memories of digging for diamonds and frantically dodging rocks on a flickery old monitor came flooding back. But after my initial excitement, the real question hit: does a beloved retro puzzler still have game in 2025, or is this another nostalgia cash-in?
The press release hits all the “anniversary edition” bullet points-remastered levels, fresh worlds, exclusive fan content, a slick new soundtrack from Chris Huelsbeck (if you know Turrican or The Great Giana Sisters, that’ll get you curious), and even a level editor. I get the appeal: recapturing the obsessive gameplay loop that made Boulder Dash a legend. But here’s what sets this package apart: it brings a whopping 240 levels in total—60 original, lovingly updated stages, and 180 new challenges across six worlds (plus three from contest-winning fans). For a $20/£20 tag, that’s meaty by retro standards.
But for veterans, the big draw is probably the level editor and community sharing. The best modern remakes—from Mario Maker to Tetris Effect—thrive on user creativity. If BBG nails the tools and community curation, this could transform Boulder Dash from a museum piece into a thriving puzzle platform. I’m cautiously hopeful—but “level editors” in retro remakes are infamous for being clunky or underbaked, so I’m really waiting to see some hands-on impressions.

It’s easy for publishers to pump out a pixel-perfect port, slap on a vintage logo, and call it day. Boulder Dash’s 40th, to its credit, actually aims higher. You get the full set of classic Atari and Commodore 64 versions—to scratch that authenticity itch—but also shiny new designs, new game elements (acid rocks, enemy generators, vertical walls), and three playable “heroes.” There’s some self-aware fun here: the devs clearly care about keeping the spirit alive while injecting enough modern flair for folks who missed the original era. Still, I have to ask—is toggling between “Atari” and “C64” modes just a gimmick, or does it really change how the game feels?
I’m also watching for how the level design evolves. The original Boulder Dash was part puzzle, part action-twitch; today’s best puzzle-platformers (think Celeste or Spelunky) demand far more variety and challenge than “dig, dodge, grab diamonds, repeat.” If the new levels and mechanics really mix up the formula, there’s some serious potential here. If not, even nostalgia goggles might slip.

If you’re an old Boulder Dash diehard, this edition is probably your dream scenario: it’s faithful where it counts, but adds a bunch of stuff to keep things fresh (plus a proper modern-game soundtrack—thanks, Huelsbeck!). But let’s not pretend this is just about old-timers reliving their youth. The 40th Anniversary is clearly pitched at retro newcomers too, banking on that ongoing appetite for “classic-but-modern” indie games.
At $20/£20, it faces real competition. We’re living in the golden era of puzzle-platformers, many of which borrow Boulder Dash DNA (just look at Steam’s endless well of indie gems!). For this edition to stand out, the playability, community ecosystem, and ongoing updates will make or break it. If you’re already hooked on custom maps and world-building in games like Mario Maker or Steam’s sprawling mod scenes, this might finally give Boulder Dash a long-overdue modern spotlight.

Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary deserves a spot on your radar if you love clever, challenging puzzlers—especially if you have history with the series. There’s honest effort here to modernize without losing what made the original great. Still, the real value will show once the community steps in and we see whether those new tools and levels deliver more than just a nostalgia trip. If they pull it off, this rock-dodging classic could finally shine again—otherwise, it risks getting buried in the crowded field of puzzle-platformers.
