To start DMZ, select the mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, assign an Operator to an Active Duty slot, equip a Loadout, and choose a solo or squad deployment. Your first priority in the Hajin Exclusion Zone should be completing a manageable objective and extracting. A successful exfil develops the Operator you brought in; staying for another container risks both your carried equipment and a recovery bill.
DMZ Early Access began on October 20, 2026 for digital pre-orders and pre-purchases, ahead of the October 23 global launch. DMZ is included exclusively with Modern Warfare 4. Supported platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Xbox PC, Steam, and Battle.net. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are not supported, and Game Pass does not include the game at launch.

Recruit Operators into your Active Duty slots
You begin with two Active Duty Operator slots, with another unlocking through DMZ Player Levels. An Operator stays assigned to their slot until you dismiss them and recruit a replacement. Treat that choice as the start of an individual build: Operators earn their own Traits and become more expensive to recover as you invest in them.
Give your starting roster different jobs. Develop one Operator for direct engagements or recovery through Warfighter and Survivalist Traits, and another for resource collection through Scout. That gives you a combat-focused choice for hostile objectives and a looting-focused choice when you want ingredients for the FOB. Operators can invest across multiple trees, so these roles do not require committing every point to one tree.
A Free Loadout is available whenever you deploy if you need one. Running out of equipment does not prevent another attempt. It also does not remove an Operator’s MIA status: an unavailable Operator still needs to be recovered or dismissed before that slot can be used again.
Make your first deployment an extraction run
Story Missions and Dynamic Operations provide structured objectives and award DMZ XP. Use one of those as the purpose of your opening deployment rather than trying to gather every resource you encounter. Hajin contains hostile forces and other players, while changing weather and military objectives can alter the conditions around your route.
- Choose an objective you can finish with your current Loadout. An inexperienced Operator benefits from a successful extraction before taking on a longer sequence of encounters.
- Locate an extraction opportunity while pursuing that objective. Recovered technology and resources still have to leave Hajin with you; collecting them is only part of the run.
- Reassess after completing the objective. Another loot stop puts your existing haul and Operator at risk. Extracting also earns a Trait Point, giving an early exit a progression benefit beyond the items you carry.
Both solo and squad deployments are supported. With a squad, coordinate around the same objective and extraction plan so one player’s extra looting does not extend everyone’s exposure.
Understand Dog Tags, Trait Points, and DMZ levels
Every Active Duty Operator carries a Dog Tag. Its quality improves as that Operator progresses, earns DMZ XP, and completes extractions. Dog Tag progression is tied to earning Traits, making it part of the Operator’s development rather than a cosmetic record.

Each successful exfil earns the Operator one Trait Point. Earned points are banked as you progress, and you can save or spend them through the Operators Station’s Traits menu. Your first point unlocks the initial Trait in a chosen tree; subsequent points can advance that tree or open the others.
Dog Tags can also be taken from eliminated Operators. Collected tags appear in your Loadout profile, which records their type, any bounty on the Operator, and the human Operators you have eliminated.
Keep individual Operator development separate from your overall DMZ level. DMZ has its own 70-level progression track, distinct from Multiplayer’s Level 1-55 system. Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, Side Ops, and other activities award DMZ XP, with rewards including Gear, Station Upgrades, 3D Printer Recipes, Survival Kits, and Fire Support.
Choose Traits for the Operator’s role
There are 66 Traits across Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist, but an individual Operator can earn no more than 18 Trait Points before Prestige. Most Traits are hidden and randomized, so build around the choices that appear rather than expecting a guaranteed sequence of unlocks.
| Trait Tree | Useful role | Traits to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Warfighter | Direct engagements and combat sustain. | Quick Fix reduces the health-regeneration delay after killing an enemy Operator or hostile. Equipment Professional slowly recharges equipped Lethals and Tacticals. Possum provides a once-per-match self-revive from death. |
| Scout | Resource collection, detection, and field preparation. | Extra Container Loot gives a chance of finding an additional item in containers. Extra Loot from Hostiles lets enemies occasionally drop an Uncommon printer ingredient, with a small chance of a Rare one. Thermal Padding hides you from UAVs. |
| Survivalist | Recovery, equipment upkeep, and extraction support. | Metabolism slowly regenerates lost health sections. Impact Smokes releases smoke when you are downed. Die Hard automatically calls an exfil near the pick-up point and grants unlimited bleed-out time while in Last Stand. |
For an early resource-gathering Operator, Scout’s container and ingredient effects directly support bringing materials back to the FOB. For an Operator regularly fighting hostiles, Warfighter’s Quick Fix or Equipment Professional can support repeated encounters. Survivalist offers recovery-focused choices for either role.
Read the available branch before spending a point. Once selected, a Trait is locked in, and alternatives on that branch cannot be obtained. Bank points if you have not settled on the Operator’s role; spend them when an available effect supports the deployments you intend to run. Investing points also increases that Operator’s MIA recovery cost.
Recover an MIA Operator without losing their Traits
An Operator eliminated during deployment becomes MIA — Missing in Action — and cannot deploy again until recovered or dismissed. Recovery uses DMZ Cash held in your in-game Bank.

- At the FOB, open the Active Duty station and select the MIA Operator’s profile.
- Pay the required DMZ Cash from your Bank to recover them.
- Equip a fresh Loadout before deploying again. Recovery preserves selected Traits, but the Operator loses their gear.
The recovery cost rises with the number of invested Trait Points. A highly developed Operator therefore carries a larger financial risk than a fresh recruit. Use your less-developed Operator for learning unfamiliar objectives when protecting the Bank matters more than bringing your strongest build.
You can also dismiss the MIA Operator and recruit a replacement. Weigh that choice against the Traits already invested: recovery preserves the developed build, while replacement lets you restart without paying that recovery bill. A Free Loadout can solve an equipment shortage after recovery, but it does not pay the recovery cost itself.
Prestige an Operator for a permanent Trait
Operator Prestige becomes available after that Operator has earned 18 Trait Points, you have the required DMZ Cash, and you equip the required collection of rare gear. This is an individual Operator system, separate from standard Multiplayer progression.
Remove anything you want to keep from the Backpack before activating Prestige. Its contents are wiped. Prestige also resets the Operator’s Trait Points, so plan to rebuild their regular Trait selection afterward.
In exchange, the Operator receives a randomly selected Permanent Prestige Trait from the available pool. You cannot choose the result. The permanent Trait belongs to that specific Operator and remains attached even if they are dismissed, moved to another Active Duty slot, or given a different Operator Skin; it does not become a roster-wide benefit.
After Prestige, that Operator can earn Trait Points again and work toward another Prestige. Each successive Prestige requires more valuable equipment and a higher DMZ Cash payment, so prepare both the qualifying gear and the Bank balance before committing.
