Cinder City
Honestly, Gamescom is always a barrage of world premieres and trailers-but when I saw NCSOFT pinning its 2025-2026 lineup on a brand-new MMO shooter called Cinder City, my curiosity woke up fast. Sure, I’ve been burned by splashy MMO promises before, but there are a few big reasons why Cinder City might change the narrative, especially if you grew up with Lineage or Guild Wars and wondered when NCSOFT would try something truly different again.
Let’s face it—“MMO shooter” means a lot and nothing these days. For every great looter-shooter, there are two more with bullet-sponge enemies and empty, grindy maps (looking at you, Anthem). But Cinder City is swinging in with two hooks: first, it’s set in a post-apocalyptic Seoul, not the usual American city or generic wasteland. Seoul’s giant-sprawling landmarks and tech-infused ruins promise genuinely fresh backdrops, which matters after the umpteenth ruined New York.
Second, there’s a narrative thread baked into the pitch: you’re hunting for your missing daughter while forced to make brutal choices—alone or with a squad. The “knight in future armor” bit hints at mechs and heavy gear, which we’ll see more of at the Nvidia RTX reveal. This isn’t just open world for open world’s sake; there’s supposed to be consequence to your decisions. Now, I’ve heard that line before, but if they deliver on player agency—maybe give us branches with real impact?—that’s a major change of pace from static MMO questing.

I groaned a little reading about yet another “RTX flagship” at a big show, because tech demos don’t always translate into gameplay that feels alive. But NCSOFT is doubling down on NVIDIA tech: full Ray Tracing, DLSS 4, frame generation, and Reflex—even on GeForce NOW for the cloud crowd. For a studio known more for their art direction than raw technology, this is an aggressive flex. South Korean MMOs are gorgeous, sure, but not always optimized for Western rigs. Here, the promise is day-one parity and no compromises across PC and next-gen consoles. If that’s real, and not just sizzle, it could put Cinder City ahead of genre competitors visually and functionally.
The hands-on event at the GeForce RTX showcase is also a savvy move: curated gameplay, not some pre-rendered vertical slice. That means they have enough confidence to let skeptics and press kick the tires—something games with vaporware syndrome almost never do.
Let’s not ignore the elephant in the room—NCSOFT hasn’t had an internationally disruptive new IP since Guild Wars and Blade & Soul. Cinder City is clearly positioned to break the “Asia-centric” mold and compete directly in the Western shooter market. Announcing multiplatform support (PC, console, and cloud streaming) is code for: “We want Destiny’s and Warframe’s audience, and we’re willing to fight for it.”
I’ll admit, I flinched at the “VIP hands-on only at our B2B booth” part. As always, there’s a risk that what’s shown to press might not match what regular gamers get. But the fact that Cinder City is NCSOFT’s headline act at their booth, with gameplay front and center, is a sign they’re serious—at least until we get launch-day hands-on and see if the promises stand up to real-world player chaos and PvP hacking attempts.
So, do I think Cinder City is guaranteed greatness? Not even close—big MMOs are a minefield for hype. What matters next are: server stability, real player freedom in missions (not just checkpoint grinds), a fair pricing model (F2P or buy-to-play?), and meaningful PvE/PvP integration. If NCSOFT can make Seoul’s apocalypse feel alive and not just pretty, this could finally be the genre shakeup we’ve been waiting for.
Cinder City is NCSOFT’s biggest Western MMO shooter bet in years—set in a devastated Seoul, built for latest-gen RTX graphics, and actually putting hands-on demos out there at Gamescom. If the gameplay delivers consequence and variety, it could punch above the MMO shooter crowd. But temper the hype: only time, and eventual public tests, will prove if this isn’t just a flashy demo.
