With the Nintendo Switch 2 looming on the horizon, fans are hungry to know which hit titles will join the party. High on the wishlist? Clair Obscur: Expedition 33—the jaw-dropping, painterly RPG from Sandfall Interactive that’s already turning heads with its evocative visuals and heartfelt storytelling. But is there a real chance we’ll see this indie sensation grace Nintendo’s next-generation hardware? The answer, according to the developers, is… a definite “maybe.”

During a recent Twitch chat with streamer MisterMV, Sandfall Interactive’s CEO Guillaume Broche and composer Lorien Testard didn’t dodge the question on everyone’s mind: will Expedition 33 come to Switch 2? Broche was careful not to set the hype train running off the rails, stating that “it’s too early to say,” but he didn’t dismiss the idea either. In fact, he described a Switch 2 port as “something that could be interesting.” Not quite a commitment, but not a door slammed shut, either.

The buzz is understandable. Expedition 33 dazzles with lush, hand-painted environments and tactical, turn-based battles that rival the genre’s best. Its world draws inspiration from classic JRPGs—think Final Fantasy—but carves its own path with an emotional core and art direction that’s won over both critics and fans. And with rumors swirling that Final Fantasy VII Remake might also find a home on Switch 2, the prospect of seeing Sandfall’s breakout RPG on the platform feels more plausible than ever.

Technical concerns have kept Expedition 33 from landing on the original Switch, but the beefier hardware expected from Switch 2 could be a game changer. “We have a lot of opportunities now,” Broche noted, hinting that the team is weighing their options and keeping an eye on what’s possible with Nintendo’s next console.

What really sets Expedition 33 apart, though, is the way it was made. Sandfall’s tight-knit crew of 34 started by composing the soundtrack first—a bold move that shaped the game’s entire aesthetic. Testard’s sweeping, emotional score became a North Star for the project, a creative process worlds apart from big-budget studios that often tack on music in the final crunch.

Fans hoping for more from this universe may have reason to be optimistic. While Broche and Testard stopped short of confirming a sequel, they left the door open to future stories—be it DLC, a follow-up, or fresh adventures in the same imaginative world. For now, though, Switch devotees will have to be patient. There’s no official word on a port (yet), but the developers’ clear interest and the Switch 2’s rumored horsepower make this dream far from impossible.

Until then, RPG lovers can only hope that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 brings its turn-based brilliance and painterly charm to Nintendo’s next big thing. If it does, expect a standing ovation.
