Esquie is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s key world-map companion. He joins the story as an ally, then becomes essential to exploration because his traversal abilities unlock routes, secrets, and late-game areas that the party cannot reach on foot. The biggest unlock is underwater travel: it requires reaching Act 3 and raising Esquie’s Relationship Level to 6.
Spoiler warning: this guide covers late-game world-map progression and the access requirements for the post-launch area Verso’s Drafts.
Esquie serves two connected roles in Expedition 33: he is a major story companion with his own relationship progression, and he is the party’s expanding method of traversing the world map. That makes his progression more important than a standard optional character bond.
When Esquie gains a new movement capability, previously blocked parts of the overworld become reachable. This includes optional routes and late-game content, so treating his relationship rank as an afterthought can leave sections of the map unavailable long after the party is strong enough to handle their enemies.
Esquie’s movement kit develops alongside the main story and his relationship progression. The game introduces him early enough that its world map is built around traveling with him, then layers new access options on top of that foundation.
The practical takeaway is simple: map barriers are often progression gates rather than signs that you missed a path. If water or another world-map obstacle blocks the route, check Esquie’s current progression before spending time searching for an alternate entrance.

For the most important current traversal gate, complete these three requirements in order. Reaching only one or two of them will not open the route to Verso’s Drafts.
Keep Esquie’s relationship progression active whenever new interactions or advancement opportunities become available. A main-story clear alone does not replace the Relationship Level 6 requirement, and relationship progress alone does not bypass the Act 3 story gate.
Verso’s Drafts is a world-map area located near Lumière. It was added in update 1.5.0, but it does not appear as instantly accessible bonus content. The entrance is gated by Esquie’s underwater traversal ability.
The common trap is seeing the area’s position near Lumière and assuming there must be a land route. There is no need to circle the coastline looking for a conventional entrance once the location is visible. The missing requirement is Esquie’s traversal upgrade.

Ultimate Guide Strategy Guide + Weekly Pro Tips
Esquie’s relationship rank is an exploration objective. In a typical RPG, companion progression may primarily provide character scenes or combat bonuses; here, it also governs whether the world map opens fully enough to reach certain late-game locations.
Relationship Level 6 is especially important because it unlocks underwater travel, which is the requirement attached to Verso’s Drafts. Players focused on optional bosses, side exploration, rewards, and 100% map cleanup should prioritize Esquie’s advancement alongside party builds and story progress.
Unlocking underwater travel changes the late-game world map from a mostly linear route into a broader cleanup and exploration space. It lets you revisit areas that were previously blocked by water and reach content tied to the 1.5.0 update.
Check Esquie’s Relationship Level. Act 3 is only the story requirement; you also need Level 6 to gain the underwater skill. Continue Esquie’s available relationship progression, then return to the world map after the level increase.
Confirm that you have reached Act 3. The underwater ability is tied to Esquie’s relationship progression, while Verso’s Drafts also has a separate story-progress requirement. Both conditions must be met before the area can be entered.
Stop looking for a normal route around the water. Verso’s Drafts specifically requires underwater traversal, so the route only becomes valid after Esquie has gained that ability.
Esquie is the companion that turns Expedition 33’s world map into a late-game exploration tool. Once Act 3 and Relationship Level 6 are complete, underwater travel opens the route to Verso’s Drafts and the exploration content behind it.
