Crimson Desert: How to Get Black Dye – Muiquun Vendor Route

Crimson Desert: How to Get Black Dye – Muiquun Vendor Route

FinalBoss·8/12/2026·7 min read

Black Dye is obtained most reliably through the Back Alley Shop merchant in Muiquun. Complete the Muiquun Outlaws quest chain, unlock Muiquun’s Black Market, finish the wagon work for the fence south of the village, then fast travel away and return. The merchant spawns on Muiquun’s east side and sells the dye bottle, generally for about 37.5 silver.

The trap is buying the bottle and heading straight to a dye station. Open the Black Dye in your inventory first. This permanently registers the color, allowing a Dye House or Dyer NPC to apply it to compatible armor, weapons, cloaks, and clothing.

Requirements Before Chasing Black Dye

  • Access to the dye system.
  • A dye-capable gear piece in your inventory.
  • Access to Muiquun and the Muiquun Outlaws faction quests.
  • Enough silver to purchase the dye from the Back Alley merchant.
  • Access to a Dye House or Dyer NPC after unlocking the color.

Black Dye is a color unlock rather than a consumable coating for one item. The bottle must be opened from the inventory after purchase. Once registered, the color remains available at dye services for compatible equipment.

Complete the Muiquun Quest Chain

Muiquun is the key location for the vendor route. Enter the village and work through the Raiders in Muiquun quests under the Muiquun Outlaws faction tab. Reaching the end of the initial quests is necessary, but it does not immediately place the dye seller in the village.

Find Both Eavesdropping Triggers

After clearing the first Muiquun quests, look for the two eavesdropping opportunities in the settlement. These conversations advance the chain that leads to the black-market content. The required follow-up conversation is on the right side of the village.

Choosing that conversation unlocks the next commission path. Skipping the eavesdropping triggers leaves the Black Market quest unavailable even if the earlier Raiders in Muiquun objectives are complete.

Accept Muiquun’s Black Market

Open the Crimson Desert Commissions tab and accept Muiquun’s Black Market. This is the quest that turns the village from a general faction hub into the route for the dye merchant.

  1. Travel to Muiquun.
  2. Finish the Raiders in Muiquun quests for the Muiquun Outlaws.
  3. Complete both eavesdropping opportunities that appear afterward.
  4. Use the conversation on the right side of Muiquun.
  5. Accept Muiquun’s Black Market from Crimson Desert Commissions.

Finish the Fence’s Wagon Jobs

After accepting the Black Market commission, speak with the fence or wagon dealer south of Muiquun. His objectives involve wagon-stealing or delivery work. Plan for two runs before expecting the merchant unlock to take effect.

These jobs matter because they control the Back Alley Shop spawn. Completing generic Muiquun tasks, clearing nearby encounters, or revisiting the village without finishing the fence’s work does not replace this requirement.

Warning: Do not search Muiquun’s eastern alley immediately after the final wagon objective. The merchant may fail to appear until the area reloads.

Force the Back Alley Merchant to Spawn

Fast travel away from Muiquun once the Black Market jobs are complete. An Abyss Nexus or any distant fast-travel point is sufficient. Then return to Muiquun and check the east side of the settlement for the Back Alley Shop merchant.

The fast-travel reset refreshes the village state. Waiting nearby, resting in place, or repeatedly checking the alley is less reliable than leaving the area and returning after the quest state has updated.

  • Merchant missing: Confirm the fence’s wagon work is finished, fast travel to a distant point, and return to Muiquun.
  • Black Market commission absent: Recheck the two eavesdropping opportunities and the right-side village conversation.
  • Wrong merchant: The dye seller is the Back Alley Shop merchant on Muiquun’s east side, not a standard village vendor.

Buy and Unlock the Black Dye Bottle

Speak to the Back Alley merchant and purchase Black Dye, also described as True Black Dye. The listed price is around 37.5 silver. Treat that value as a planning amount; vendor pricing can vary with economy or localization adjustments.

Open the dye item in the inventory immediately after buying it. This is the required unlock step. Carrying the bottle to a Dye House without opening it leaves the color unavailable in the dye interface.

  1. Buy Black Dye from the Back Alley Shop merchant.
  2. Open the inventory.
  3. Use or open the Black Dye bottle.
  4. Travel to a Dye House or Dyer NPC.
  5. Select a compatible item and apply the unlocked black color.

Where to Apply Black Dye

Unlocking the color and applying it are separate actions. Use a Dye House or Dyer NPC after opening the bottle. The most useful locations are the Varnia Dye House in the northeast and Dyer Oliver at Howling Hill camp. Greymane Camp also has dye-service access on routes that have reached that area.

Select gear that supports dyeing, then choose Black Dye from the unlocked color list. The color can be used on armor, weapons, cloaks, and clothing where the item’s appearance settings permit it. An item that lacks dye support will not gain a black-color option merely because the dye has been unlocked.

Alternative Method: Craft Midnight Black Dye

A separate black-color route uses Midnight Black Dye crafted at a cauldron. This method is useful when the recipe is available in the current game version, but its materials vary between builds and localization data. One recipe uses Squid Ink, Crow Wings, and Mordant; another uses Charcoal in place of Crow Wings.

For the crafting route, gather the recipe ingredients, use a cauldron, craft Midnight Black Dye, and open the finished bottle in the inventory. The color must still be applied through a Dye House or Dyer NPC afterward.

  • Squid Ink: obtained by fishing squid in rivers or coastal water.
  • Crow Wings: obtained from crows and other suitable birds in forest or cliff regions.
  • Mordant: purchased from merchants or provisioners.
  • Cauldron location: a practical option is in Hene, near the north bridge over Three Saints Falls.

The Muiquun vendor route remains the cleaner route for a direct true-black unlock because it avoids material farming and recipe variations. The crafting method is best reserved for players who already have the Midnight Black Dye recipe and its required ingredients.

Black Dye Problems and Their Fixes

  • The dye does not appear at the Dye House: open the bottle from the inventory, then reopen the dye interface.
  • The Back Alley Shop is absent: complete the Black Market wagon work, fast travel away from Muiquun, and return.
  • Muiquun’s Black Market is unavailable: complete Raiders in Muiquun, locate both eavesdropping events, and trigger the right-side conversation.
  • The item cannot be colored: use a gear piece with dye support. The dye unlock does not override item restrictions.
  • A found dye looks red rather than black: use the Back Alley merchant’s Black Dye or the Midnight Black Dye craft rather than relying on alternate pickup claims.

The full Muiquun route takes roughly 20 to 40 minutes when the quest triggers and NPC positions are already known. Expect 45 to 90 minutes when locating the eavesdropping events, learning the wagon route, and completing the first visit to the village.
