Cyberpunk 2077’s Paramount movie needs more than Night City’s neon

Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, with CD Projekt Red and Lorenzo di Bonaventura producing. Its story, cast, director, screenwriter and release timing remain unannounced, so players should expect a project in development rather than a film approaching release.

Night City’s skyline is the easy part. The harder job for Paramount’s Cyberpunk 2077 movie will be finding a story that makes all that chrome worth watching. A recognisable city can sell the premise. It cannot supply the characters, perspective or consequences that make this world hit.

That is where this project deserves scrutiny. Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the game’s universe, with CD Projekt Red co-producing alongside Lorenzo di Bonaventura. The studio and producers are in place. The creative identity of the film remains open.

The producer lineup gets it moving, not across the finish line

Di Bonaventura brings experience producing large studio films, including the Transformers series. That is relevant to a setting demanding extensive visual effects, dense environments and convincing physical action. Turning Night City into live action will require more than a few glowing signs and a prosthetic arm.

CD Projekt Red’s involvement matters too. The developer is participating as a producer, giving the project a direct connection to the people behind the game. Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski has welcomed Paramount as a partner sharing the company’s creative ambitions and said more details will follow at the appropriate time.

But a producing credit does not explain who gets final say over the screenplay, casting or finished film. The scope of CD Projekt Red’s creative authority has not been disclosed. That is the uncomfortable omission behind the reassuring partnership language: involvement and control are different things.

V’s story should not be treated as the default

The project is described as a film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. That leaves room for a new protagonist and a separate story. It does not establish a retelling of V’s campaign, which began with the game’s December 2020 release.

A direct adaptation would face a specific problem: V’s identity, relationships and decisions belong partly to the player. A film would have to select one version and compress a sprawling campaign into a fixed narrative. Familiarity offers an obvious marketing advantage, but it also brings substantial baggage.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners supplies the useful precedent. Released on Netflix in 2022 and co-produced by CD Projekt Red, the anime told a separate story within the same universe. It demonstrated the value of building around new characters rather than reproducing the game’s campaign. Paramount’s film has no announced connection to that series.

The next meaningful reveal is the creative team

No cast, director or screenwriter has been announced. There are also no disclosed plot details, production start date or release window. This is an early-development project; the announcement does not mean cameras are about to roll.

Keanu Reeves played Johnny Silverhand in the game, while Idris Elba played Solomon Reed in Phantom Liberty. Neither actor has been announced for the film. Their existing roles offer no basis for assuming those characters will appear.

Watch for the writer, director and story premise before treating casting as the main event. Those details will reveal whether Paramount wants a character-driven story about power and survival or a familiar brand wrapped around futuristic spectacle.

The verdict: CD Projekt Red’s participation gives this adaptation a worthwhile foundation. Its real test is whether the filmmakers understand what Night City does to people. Get that right, and the neon earns its place.
