Destiny 2
Dive into the world of Destiny 2 to explore the mysteries of the solar system and experience responsive first-person shooter combat. Unlock powerful elemental…
This caught my attention because Bungie rarely reshapes Destiny’s sandbox this aggressively. Destiny 2’s next big expansion, Renegades (launching December 2, 2025), is either a straight-up Star Wars crossover or a heavily “inspired by” homage-depending on which promo you saw. Either way, it’s clearly channeling that space-western vibe: heat-based blasters, a cantina hub, a “Frontier” contract mode across three planets and six maps, and a new Cabal power bloc called the Barant Imperium. Cool pitch. Now let’s talk about what it means for actual players.
Renegades pushes a theme Bungie’s flirted with since Forsaken’s Drifter era: outlaw Guardians doing dirty work on the fringes. The Barant Imperium-an offshoot Cabal regime—sets the stage for a rebellion arc that puts the Drifter front and center again. If you remember how Forsaken’s Gambit blended PvE grind with risk-reward, this expansion looks like Bungie doubling down on that energy, just with more swagger and better framing.
The headliner is the blaster archetype: energy guns that ditch traditional reloads for a heat meter. If you main Trace Rifles or ride Coldheart’s sustained beam, think further along that spectrum: disciplined burst fire and heat dumps matter more than magazine size. In the preview, Bungie emphasized tempo control—overheat and you’re exposed; ride the line and you shred. That’s a real mechanical shift, not just a new stat stick.

Lawless Frontier reads like a contract board turned endgame loop. Smuggling, bounties, sabotage—each contract feeds a Notoriety ladder with Syndicate factions. Leveling up unlocks gear and “Renegade abilities” specific to the mode. The risk/reward framing suggests optional modifiers that crank payout and danger. It spans three planets across six maps, which sounds handcrafted rather than another patrol zone copy-paste. If Bungie learned anything from Expedition and Salvage, it’s that players smell filler; the hope is these contracts feel closer to Dares/Presage in bite and variety.
Tharsis Outpost is the social glue. Bungie doing a cantina isn’t subtle, but I’m here for it if it streamlines the “grab contracts, tune build, bounce to activity” loop. If Syndicate vendors, lore drops, and buildcrafting all live here, it could be the best hub since the H.E.L.M. actually made seasonal play frictionless.

There’s also the Praxic Blade, an Exotic melee that’s basically a Destiny-safe lightsaber riff. The fantasy writes itself: close gaps fast, carve through red bars, maybe deflect projectiles with a perk chain. The Witch Queen’s Glaive proved Bungie can make a fresh melee/ranged hybrid sing; if Praxic Blade threads that needle without trivializing bosses, it’ll be a day-one chase.
Post-The Final Shape, Destiny 2 needed a reason to log in beyond habit. New weapon archetypes are rare (Glaives were the last big swing), and a mode that pays out on fantasy—being a roguish problem-solver instead of a cosmic demigod—could be the palette cleanser lapsed players needed. Bungie’s art and audio teams channeling classic Star Wars mood is a smart bet for vibes, and Crucible desperately needs fresh dynamics that aren’t just “another 140 RPM hand cannon.”

The naming muddle—Renegades vs. “Rebels,” crossover vs. homage—raises eyebrows, though. If it’s a licensed collab, expect cosmetics and emotes to carry the IP. If it’s just Destiny flavored with space-western spice, the core systems matter more than a logo on the box. Either way, the sandbox shakeup is the draw.
Renegades is Bungie putting a blaster to Destiny’s head—in a good way. Heat-based weapons, a contract-driven Frontier mode across six maps, and a moody cantina hub could refresh the loop if the content hits as hard as the fantasy. I’m excited, but the fun will live or die on contract variety and how blasters slot into the meta without breaking Crucible.
