Why Fox Companions Are Tricky (and Worth It)

After spending several evenings messing around in Frosted Heights, I realized foxes in Disney Dreamlight Valley are some of the fussiest critters in the game. They only appear in one biome, they make you run laps before you can even feed them, and their favorite food is one of the rarer fish in the valley. But once I figured out a reliable loop, taming them became straightforward and surprisingly efficient.

This guide walks you through exactly how I now unlock fox companions consistently: where to find them, how to catch White Sturgeon quickly, how the chase interaction works, and what I’ve learned about color variants and spawn schedules. If you follow these steps, you should be able to secure your first fox companion in just a few in-game days.

Step 1 – Get Ready in Frosted Heights

Foxes only spawn in one place: the Frosted Heights biome. If you haven’t unlocked it yet, focus on clearing the Night Thorns blocking the path and saving up the Dreamlight cost. Once it’s open, make it your regular stop for both critters and fishing.

Before you start chasing foxes, I recommend preparing the following:

  • Unlocked Frosted Heights (required – no other biome has foxes).
  • Upgraded Pickaxe so the ice and rocks don’t slow you down while chasing.
  • At least one Fishing companion at a decent friendship level.
  • 10-15 inventory slots free for fish and rewards.
  • A bit of food or cooked meals for stamina while you marathon after foxes.

Once that’s set, your daily fox routine always starts the same way: fast travel to Frosted Heights, do a quick critter scan, and if you see a fox, do not ignore it – their spawn windows can be surprisingly specific.

Step 2 – Catching White Sturgeon Efficiently

The single biggest mistake I made early on was feeding foxes random fish and then wondering why I wasn’t getting great rewards or fast unlocks. Any fish or seafood from Frosted Heights will technically feed a fox, but their favorite food is White Sturgeon, and that’s what you should plan around.

How to Recognize White Sturgeon Spots

White Sturgeon can only be caught in Frosted Heights from golden/orange fishing ripples in the water. Here’s the loop I use:

  • Run along every water edge in Frosted Heights and look for orange or golden ripples – they’re brighter than the usual white and blue spots.
  • Ignore all other ripples until you’ve checked for orange ones. They’re rarer, so prioritize them whenever they appear.
  • Use your Fishing Rod as normal, casting directly into the orange ripple and reeling in when the prompt appears.

On my runs, about half of the orange ripples gave me White Sturgeon. The rest were other high-value fish, which still sell well, so it never feels wasted.

Why You Want Several White Sturgeon

White Sturgeon are valuable even beyond fox feeding:

  • They restore around 1,800 energy if you eat them raw.
  • They sell for roughly 1,250 Star Coins at Goofy’s stall.
  • Feeding them to foxes gives the best possible fox rewards, such as Dream Shards, Motif Bags, or crafting materials.

Because you need to feed the same fox over multiple days to unlock it as a companion, I aim to keep at least 3–5 White Sturgeon in storage as my “fox fund” and sell or cook extras.

Pro Tip: Always Bring a Fishing Buddy

I always bring a villager with the Fishing role when I’m farming Sturgeon in Frosted Heights. With a high friendship level, they’ll often duplicate the fish you catch from those orange ripples. That’s how I built up enough White Sturgeon to cover several foxes without feeling the grind.

Step 3 – Finding and Chasing Foxes the Right Way

Once you’re stocked on fish, it’s time to actually deal with the foxes themselves. This is where I wasted the most time until I understood their behavior.

When you see a fox in Frosted Heights, you can’t walk up and feed it immediately. Instead, you must play a short chase game similar to how raccoons and rabbits behave.

  • Run toward the fox – it will sprint away a short distance.
  • Follow it; after running 3–4 times, it will suddenly stop and look at you.
  • When it pauses, carefully approach until the “Approach” interaction prompt appears (on PC it’s usually E, on consoles you’ll see the appropriate button).
  • Press the button, then choose the food from your inventory.

If you rush too fast while it’s still in “run” mode, it’ll keep darting away and you’ll just be doing circles around the biome. The trick is to stay close but not on top of it until you notice it stop and relax, then close the gap slowly.

Sometimes terrain can make this harder – I’ve had foxes stick near cliffs or trees where they’re awkward to click. If that happens, break a few nearby mining nodes or move around them to get a cleaner line so you can trigger the interaction.

Step 4 – Feeding Rules and Unlocking Fox Companions

Feeding a fox once just gives you rewards. To unlock it as a companion, you need to feed the same color fox over multiple days.

Here’s what has consistently worked for me, plus what the community has observed:

  • Feed only one color at a time. Progress is tied to that specific fox color. Switching around slows everything down.
  • Use White Sturgeon whenever possible. It’s their favorite, and players (myself included) see faster unlocks and better loot with it.
  • Feed the same fox color once per day. Extra feedings of that color on the same day don’t seem to accelerate progress.
  • In my experience, foxes unlocked after about 2–3 favorite-food feedings on separate days. Some players report that two consecutive days of White Sturgeon are enough; others (including me with one fox) needed a third day.

So, to be safe, plan on 2–3 days of feeding the same color fox its favorite food. Once it’s unlocked, you’ll find it in the Inventory → Wardrobe → Companions menu, where you can set it to follow you around.

Remember: any Frosted Heights fish or seafood will still count as a feeding for that day if you don’t have Sturgeon on hand – you just miss out on the best rewards and potentially slower taming. I sometimes use cheaper fish for “filler” days if I’m low on Sturgeon.

Fox Colors and Their Spawn Schedules

There are five fox color variants you can befriend in Frosted Heights:

  • Classic
  • Red
  • Black
  • Blue
  • White

Each color has its own spawn schedule across the week. You can always check this in-game under Collections → Critters → Frosted Heights. The table there is the most up-to-date reference and may change with patches.

Based on my save and current community tracking, the schedules roughly line up like this (all times are in-game local time and can change with updates, so treat this as a guide, not law):

  • Classic Fox
    – Wednesday: All day
    – Friday: All day
    – Sunday: 12 AM to 12 PM
  • Red Fox
    – Saturday: 4 PM to 10 PM
  • Black Fox
    – Tuesday: All day
    – Wednesday: All day
    – Saturday: All day
    – Sunday: 12 PM to 12 AM
  • Blue Fox
    – Tuesday: All day
    – Thursday: All day
    – Friday: All day
    – Sunday: 12 AM to 12 PM
  • White Fox
    – Thursday: All day
    – Saturday: All day
    – Sunday: 12 PM to 12 AM

Because these schedules are heavily based on player observation and can shift with patches, I always double-check the Collections menu before planning which fox to target. If a color isn’t showing up when you expect it, that’s the first place to look.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

I burned a lot of time on small mistakes with foxes. Here are the big ones so you can skip that phase entirely:

  • Trying to feed without chasing – You must chase them 3–4 times until they stop and let you approach. If you can’t see the “Approach” prompt, you’re too early.
  • Feeding different colors randomly – Progress towards unlocking a companion is color-specific. Pick one color (e.g., Blue Fox) and stick with it until it unlocks.
  • Ignoring White Sturgeon – Yes, other Frosted Heights fish work, but you miss the best rewards and likely prolong the taming process.
  • Expecting instant unlocks – Foxes are designed as a multi-day goal. Plan on several in-game days of consistent feeding.
  • Forgetting daily visit windows – If your chosen color only appears at certain times, set a mental or real-world reminder so you don’t miss the slot.

If a fox refuses to show up despite the schedule, try leaving Frosted Heights, doing another activity for a bit, and coming back. Occasionally, simply reloading the area has fixed missing critters for me.

Quick Checklist: From First Fox to New Companion

Here’s the condensed loop I now use whenever I want a new fox companion:

  • Unlock Frosted Heights and bring a Fishing companion.
  • Farm orange/golden fishing ripples in Frosted Heights until you have at least 3 White Sturgeon.
  • Open Collections → Critters to pick which fox color to target based on today’s schedule.
  • During that fox’s active window, head to Frosted Heights and locate it.
  • Chase it 3–4 times until it stops and relaxes, then use the Approach interaction.
  • Feed it White Sturgeon (or another Frosted Heights fish if you’re desperate).
  • Repeat the feeding on the next available day that color appears, aiming for 2–3 total favorite-food feedings.
  • Once unlocked, equip your new fox under Inventory → Wardrobe → Companions.

Once you’ve gone through this process for one fox, the others feel much easier. The hardest part is just getting into the habit of checking Frosted Heights on the right days and keeping a small stash of White Sturgeon ready. If I can drag my way through those icy chases and end up with a whole squad of foxes following me around, you absolutely can too.
