Nintendo’s latest Donkey Kong adventure, Bananza, swings onto shelves on July 17, arriving exclusively on Switch 2 and offering local GameShare co-op on the original Switch. The game fuses physics-driven destruction with streamlined RPG-lite upgrades, animal-based transformations and a full two-player campaign starring Pauline—marking a bold experiment for the franchise.

Destructible Environments & RPG-Lite Upgrades

At the heart of Bananza are 3D jungles and ancient ruins whose every support beam, boulder and wall can shatter, collapse or crumble. Hidden in the debris are Cavendish coins for scoring and “banandium crystals,” which feed a concise skill tree. Early perks boost Kong’s health, combo reach and dodge speed, while higher-tier unlocks grant auto-healing near landmark statues or bonus damage to armored foes. Crystals arrive through environmental mayhem, optional side quests—like freeing captured tiki spirits—and secret chambers guarded by mini-bosses. The upgrade path offers enough depth to please completionists without overwhelming newcomers.

Animal Transformations Simplify Traversal

Bananza fruit infused with elemental essences lets Kong morph into specialized animal forms on the fly. Zebra Kong skirts past silent sentries, Ostrich Kong glides over molten pools, and Crystal Kong reflects projectiles back at enemies. Two additional forms—Rhino Kong, which charges through breakable barriers, and Electric Kong, which zaps nearby switches—add fresh tactics. Each transformation tweaks movement and attacks intuitively, ensuring you experiment across varied terrains without wrestling through complex menus.

True Two-Player Co-op on Switch & OG Switch

For the first time, Nintendo delivers a true Donkey Kong co-op campaign. A second player can join wirelessly on an original Switch via GameShare, sharing the full overworld map and progression. On Switch 2, solo play holds a rock-steady 60 fps, dipping to around 45–50 fps in split-screen when Pauline tags in. The OG Switch averages 30–35 fps during heavy destruction, though load times remain a crisp 10–12 seconds between zones. Save files sync across hardware, so co-op sessions carry over to both consoles.

Amiibo, Editions & Pre-Order Bonuses

Scanning Donkey Kong or Pauline amiibo grants a one-time cache of banandium crystals plus exclusive cosmetic skins. Nintendo stresses these extras are optional and won’t lock away core upgrades. Pre-orders through the eShop include a dynamic Switch 2 theme and an in-game stamp pack for instant chat reactions. A limited-edition physical bundle—packaged with a collectible steelbook and themed carrying case—will also be available at select retailers.

Graphics, Soundtrack & Accessibility

Bananza debuts a dynamic camera system that adapts to tight platforming sections and sprawling vistas. On Switch 2, it runs in native 1440p with HDR support; on original hardware, dynamic resolution scaling keeps gameplay smooth. The orchestral score by veteran composer Hiroji Tanaka remixes classic Donkey Kong Country tunes with jungle drums and steelpan motifs. Accessibility features include colorblind palettes, adjustable difficulty, subtitle customization and an option to skip most cutscenes.

Early Impressions & Potential Pitfalls

Initial hands-on sessions praise the satisfying crunch of collapsing ruins and the fluidity of Kong’s new maneuvers. Pauline’s vocal attacks—used to grow vine bridges or shatter glass—add co-op flair but may feel repetitive over time. Likewise, the thrill of uncovering every hidden chamber could wane if crystal hunting turns into a rote grind. Performance on legacy hardware will likely be the subject of weekend livestreams and teardown videos as players test every collapse and explosion.

Looking Ahead

Donkey Kong Bananza represents Nintendo’s most ambitious DK outing in years. With its July 17 release, the title will reveal whether destructible jungles, RPG-lite progression and seamless co-op can redefine the series. Future DLC could introduce new environments, boss rush modes or online leaderboards for speedrunners. For now, Bananza looks poised to reignite interest in Donkey Kong on both Switch 2 and the original console this summer.
