FF7 Revelation’s “Physical” Edition May Not Mean a Disc

I have watched a “physical” game purchase turn into a redeemed code and an empty collector’s box, which is why the wording around Final Fantasy VII Revelation matters more than it first appears. A box on a store shelf is not automatically a playable disc, a tradable copy, or a long-term preservation option.

Director Naoki Hamaguchi has said he is working to arrange “some kind of physical edition” for the final chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. That is encouraging for collectors, especially because he has spoken warmly about fans bringing boxed games to events for developer signatures. But Square Enix is still deciding its exact SKU lineup, and Hamaguchi cannot guarantee a traditional disc or cartridge release.

Revelation is scheduled for spring 2027 on PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC — within the reported window before PlayStation stops manufacturing discs for new releases in 2028. The timing means a conventional PS5 edition remains possible. It does not mean Square Enix has committed to one, nor that every platform and region will receive the same format.

The distinction changes the value of a preorder. A full disc or cartridge can generally be lent, traded, resold, and retained as part of a collection. A code-in-box release is effectively a digital license once redeemed, leaving the packaging with far less resale or preservation value. A hybrid package with an installer disc and a mandatory download would sit somewhere between those outcomes, but still would not offer the same offline utility as a complete game on physical media.

Buyers should not treat “physical edition” as a promise until a retailer identifies the exact product. Confirm whether the SKU contains a disc or cartridge, whether it holds the full game rather than an installer, which territory it comes from, and whether imported DLC will be region-compatible. Also check cancellation terms if the listing changes to a code-only package.

Until Square Enix publishes platform-by-platform edition details, collectors should wait for a clearly labeled disc or cartridge SKU rather than preorder based on the box art alone.
