Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold is giving tanks a reason to rethink their usual square-foot of boss hitbox. Bastion, the expansion’s newly revealed main tank job, fights with dual Skyltborg greatshields that shift between ranged and melee use. That sounds like a flashy weapon gimmick, but the meaningful part is positional freedom: Evercold may ask its tanks to manage encounters from more than one comfortable place.
Square Enix revealed Bastion alongside an extended Evercold teaser at Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Berlin. The January 2027 expansion is also bringing Realmship areas Naglfar and Hringhorni, the city of Fargarth, and crossover raid content tied to Evangelion: THRICE UPON A TIME and FINAL FANTASY VII Remake. The Switch 2 version enters open beta on August 4, expanding the game’s audience before the expansion lands.
Bastion starts at level 90 and is positioned directly as a main tank. Its dual greatshields are not decorative slabs of metal strapped to the arms; they are the center of its offensive and defensive cycle. The job uses ranged-to-melee transformations, plus actions restricted to Evolved Mode, making weapon state part of the rotation rather than a cosmetic flourish.
That is the detail worth watching. Final Fantasy XIV’s tanks generally have distinct flavors, but their fundamental spatial job is familiar: keep the enemy planted, face it away from the party, execute mitigation, and preserve melee uptime. Bastion’s shield-and-gun setup introduces a mid-range pattern into that routine. Players will need to learn when mobility and range are an advantage and when they are an efficient way to misplace a boss and irritate seven other people.
The transformation mechanics also suggest Bastion’s mitigation will be closely linked to its damage loop. If defensive value is bound to changing shield states and activating Evolved Mode, the job’s skill ceiling will come from timing those transitions through mechanics rather than treating cooldowns as a separate emergency toolbar. That is more engaging than another tank built around a familiar combo and a new coat of particle effects, provided Square Enix keeps the timing readable.
The Bastion reveal repeatedly frames it as a main tank, and that matters more than the guns. Evercold is not introducing a tank that can hang at range while someone else handles the dangerous parts. Bastion players should expect to take the boss, absorb tankbusters, control facing, and establish the safe geometry the rest of an eight-player party depends on.
Its range should give skilled players better tools for handling movement-heavy phases, resets, and mechanics that punish tanks who must remain glued to an enemy. It does not remove the obligation to maintain clean positioning. A shield with a firearm attached is still a shield, not a license to turn a raid boss through the group because the animation looked cool.

Ultimate Gaming Strategy Guide + Weekly Pro Tips
Evercold’s eight-player crossover raid series has the easier marketing job. Evangelion: THRICE UPON A TIME and FINAL FANTASY VII Remake are enormous names, and FFXIV has long understood how to turn crossover material into memorable spectacle.
The harder job is making that spectacle work as progression content. Crossover raids cannot survive on recognition alone; players will run them repeatedly for gear, clears, and the usual social ritual of watching a new fight turn from chaos into muscle memory. Bastion’s release alongside those raids gives Square Enix a clean opportunity to build early encounters that test its range shifts, defensive transformations, and main-tank control without making the job feel like homework.
The uncomfortable question for the next Evercold briefing is simple: how much of Bastion’s unique kit will raids genuinely reward? If its mid-range tools are only useful during scripted downtime, the job risks becoming a conventional tank with expensive visual effects. If encounter design gives those tools meaningful but fair opportunities, Bastion could become Evercold’s most interesting combat addition.
For tank players, the practical move is to treat Bastion as a main-tank job first and a gun-shield fantasy second. Its appeal will live or die on whether Evercold’s encounters reward disciplined positioning and well-timed transformations. For everyone else, the crossover raids are worth keeping an eye on-but familiar franchises are the invitation, not the payoff. The fights need to earn their weekly clears.
