FFXIV on Switch 2 Starts August 4—What the Separate Subscription Means

Final Fantasy XIV launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, 2026, with a free one-month early-access period before its platform-specific paid subscription begins.

Nintendo Switch 2 players will not need Nintendo Switch Online to enter Eorzea, but they will need to understand a different billing setup from the one used on PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. The August 4 launch begins with a free early-access and stability period intended to ease the new platform into the game’s live servers.

That window lasts roughly one month. After it ends, the Switch 2 version moves to its own paid Final Fantasy XIV subscription service. Players who buy the game solely for Switch 2 effectively follow the usual MMO model: purchase the game, use the included early period, then maintain the Switch 2 subscription to keep playing.

The key complication is for existing adventurers. A PC or PlayStation subscription does not simply cover Switch 2 access; the new version has a separate subscription requirement. Square Enix is offering existing subscribers a 50% discount on that Switch 2 fee, reducing the added cost for players who want the handheld-console option alongside their current platform.

For a clean start, buy the Switch 2 edition ahead of August 4, log in during the included month, and confirm the platform subscription before that period expires. Players returning through the Free Trial should also check which version and account they are using before committing to paid access.

The Switch 2 rollout arrives as director Naoki Yoshida’s team continues outlining the road beyond the current game, including the Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold expansion and ongoing activities such as the Gold Saucer.
