Final Fantasy VII Revelation’s disc isn’t the full game—what buyers need to know

A physical copy will not provide an offline, install-from-disc experience on launch day. Square Enix’s packaging notice for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S says an internet connection is required to download additional game data before Final Fantasy VII Revelation can be played.

That distinction matters because Revelation is a single-disc release on PS5 and Xbox, unlike Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which used two PS5 discs. Rebirth’s installation footprint reached 145.250 GB, illustrating the storage pressure Square Enix is managing for the trilogy’s final chapter. Revelation’s exact PS5 and Xbox download size has not been announced, nor has Square Enix clarified precisely how much of the game is included on the disc.

Director Naoki Hamaguchi said the team considered putting the whole game on physical media using the same disc capacity as Rebirth, but rejected that route because it would require compromises to “fidelity and quality.” His explanation is that a single disc paired with digitally delivered sections was the only way to preserve the intended version of the game.

The decision has prompted a straightforward objection: PS5 supports multi-disc games, and current Blu-ray discs can hold up to 100 GB each. For collectors, the practical concern is not whether Revelation has a disc at all, but whether that disc remains useful if download servers are unavailable years later. Square Enix has not said whether the required data is a partial installation, most of the game, or how the title will behave offline after the first download.

Nintendo Switch 2 buyers face the clearest version of the same trade-off. Its physical edition is a Game-Key Card, meaning the game downloads on first launch and requires at least 130 GB of available storage. The worldwide launch is set for April 8, 2027, across PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Practical takeaway: buy physical for the box, resale value, or disc-based entitlement — not for a self-contained copy — and leave substantial console storage and a reliable connection available before launch.
