To recruit in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, start with the character’s Character Info screen. Identify their Support, Renown and extra requirements, then spend free time on the condition still blocking them. Reserve gold and smithing materials so recruitment spending does not delay weapon upgrades.
The choice between Cai, Dietrich, Theodora and Leda carries into recruitment: a character’s requirements can change with your chosen Flame Lord. Your intended roster should therefore shape your free-time decisions early, before you pay for repeated meals or hand over valuable gifts.
The important distinction is between character-specific progress and shared progress. Support—relationship progress between characters—helps meet an individual recruit’s conditions. Renown can remove a barrier affecting several recruits. Exploration supplies materials for the team’s weapons. Concentrating entirely on one leaves the others waiting when you advance the story.

The outside-combat checklist: work on the next recruitment blocker
Whenever you return to Dagsion or gain another exploration window, check what is preventing your highest-priority character from joining. Let that requirement determine your next activity rather than repeating the same town routine regardless of progress.
- Check Character Info. Separate Support, Renown and additional requirements, including quests, items, gold payments or story conditions. A character waiting on a paralogue—a character-focused side mission—needs a different investment from one waiting on a stronger relationship.
- Review recurring activities. Check the availability of temple service, arena training and feeding the Pale Raven before allocating the rest of your time.
- Concentrate Support gains. Put your priority recruit into meals and relevant arena pairings rather than spreading every activity across the roster.
- Choose side content with overlapping benefits. Quests provide gold and Renown; some paralogues also open recruitment access. These can address several needs together.
- Protect your upgrade budget. Gather materials during world-map and dungeon exploration, and check smithing requirements before selling resources or spending your remaining gold.
You do not need to complete every possible activity before every battle. Start by opening Character Info for your priority recruit and recording every unmet requirement; use that list to choose the next useful activity.
Build Support through meals, arena training and targeted gifts
Meals are the foundation of the Support routine because they improve relationships among participants while restoring Motivation. Invite the character you most urgently want to recruit, choose food that suits their preferences, then fill the other two places with allies who need Support or Motivation. That gives the same expenditure several useful outcomes.
| Activity | What it provides | Best use | Constraint to remember |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inn meal | Support among participants and restored Motivation. | A priority recruit alongside two allies who benefit from the meal. | Costs gold; consider participants’ food preferences. |
| Arena training | Support and proficiency growth for the selected pair. | Characters who need both relationship growth and training. | Check availability before planning around another session. |
| Gifts | Support and access to the Recruit conversation for eligible characters. | A recruitment target whose interests match the item. | Consumes a gift; opening the conversation does not satisfy every recruitment condition. |
Keep the same recruitment target in your meals while their required Support remains unmet. Rotating that place among several prospective recruits distributes progress, but delays the first completed recruitment. Rotate the other two seats according to who needs Motivation or a particular relationship.
Arena training complements meals when both participants also benefit from proficiency growth. Pair a recruitment target with the protagonist when that is the relationship you need to improve, or train two intended team members whose mutual Support matters. Choose the pairing deliberately rather than treating arena training as an unlimited substitute for meals.
Use gifts selectively. Match the item to your target’s interests rather than distributing valuable gifts across characters you are not pursuing. For your next Support investment, choose a suitable gift or preferred meal for the recruit whose displayed requirement is still unmet.

Treat recruitment requirements as separate gates
Giving an appropriate gift can open the Recruit conversation, but the character may still require more Support, a higher general Renown level or further story progress. Additional conditions can include a paralogue, an item, a gold payment, negotiation or a particular dialogue choice.
Keep a short record for each intended recruit: the Support and Renown requirements shown in Character Info, plus any outstanding character-specific condition. Use the requirements for your current Flame Lord; do not assume they carry over unchanged from another protagonist’s path.
When recruitment remains unavailable, identify the unmet condition before investing again. If Support is already sufficient, another meal will not complete a required paralogue. If the relevant story event is finished but Renown is too low, quests and temple activities are the useful next move.
Check whether the character can join on your current route before committing a large share of your gifts and meal budget. Raising Support cannot remove a route restriction. Resolve the listed extra condition, then revisit the character after completing their associated chapter, quest or paralogue.
Raise Renown through activities that also fund your team
Quests are a practical source of both gold and Renown. Check the bulletin board and town opportunities, then favor objectives that move you toward a recruitment requirement while replenishing the money used on meals, gifts and weapon work.
Paralogues deserve particular attention because their rewards can overlap with recruitment access. When a target needs a specific paralogue, completing it tackles the story requirement and broader progression together. Extra Support investment cannot produce that combination.
Visiting the gods at Dagsion’s temples grants Renown, and temple service offers another recurring source of Renown and rewards. Include these activities rather than relying entirely on combat-related side content. Feeding the Pale Raven is another opportunity to collect rewards when available, though it should not replace an activity that directly resolves your recruitment blocker.
Compare your current Renown with the requirements that matter to your roster. If several recruits are waiting on Renown while their Support requirements are satisfied, quests and temple visits move more of your recruitment plan forward than another round of meals.

When theater activities become available, account for the Motivation consumed by acting before assigning units. Meals or rest can replenish Motivation, but acting spends some of it again. If Renown is your current recruitment blocker, select an available subquest, required paralogue or temple visit next rather than adding another Support session.
Gather for blacksmith upgrades before spending everything in town
Once the blacksmith becomes available, you can use the main shop in Dagsion or additional smiths in some larger world-map towns. Upgrades require both gold and materials. Basic weapons use Smithing Stones, while specialized equipment can require distinct materials.
This gives early exploration a purpose beyond immediate income. Collect resources in dungeons and across the world map, keep Smithing Stones for upgrades, and check the uses of unique materials before selling them. Gathering early lets you use the blacksmith when it opens instead of starting your material search at that point.
- Prioritize weapons used by your core team. Spreading materials across the whole roster can leave frequently used weapons waiting for an upgrade.
- Separate surplus from planned materials. Check the requirements of your intended weapon work before deciding which gathered resources to sell.
- Use other town blacksmiths when convenient. An available smith in a larger town can handle upgrades without a separate return to Dagsion.
- Budget for both relationships and equipment. Keep gold for your next useful meal or arena session alongside the cost of planned upgrades and repairs.
If an upgrade is blocked by materials rather than money, gather the missing resource during exploration. If you have the materials but lack gold, choose a quest or paralogue that can fund the work while raising Renown. Check the next core weapon’s requirements before deciding which activity to pursue.
Use the weekly calendar without letting it dictate every decision
Use meal and arena discounts when available, but only when the characters involved still need the gains. A discounted activity has little recruitment value if its target has already met the relevant Support requirement; the saved gold may be more useful for a weapon upgrade or a recruit’s payment condition.
At each weekly refresh, review the available arena, temple service and Pale Raven activities. Then compare them with your priority recruit’s remaining condition and your next weapon upgrade. Take the opportunities that serve those goals instead of spending simply because an activity has refreshed.
Before advancing the story, recheck Character Info and leave yourself a clear next action: a preferred meal for the recruit who still needs Support, the paralogue that opens recruitment, or the material needed for a core weapon. Chapters and character-specific conditions still gate progress; use your free time to resolve the requirements you can already influence.
