Pokemon FireRed / Pokemon LeafGreen
Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen+ is intended to be the definitive FireRed and LeafGreen experience. It adds many quality of life and gameplay conveniences to mak…
These Switch ports of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen aren’t just a trip down memory lane—they force you to commit to one set of roster quirks from day one. With only local wireless trades at launch and no guaranteed online fixes, the handful of exclusive Pokémon in each version directly shapes your early team and how quickly you can fill Kanto’s Pokédex.
On February 27, 2026, FireRed and LeafGreen arrive as digital-only downloads on the Nintendo Switch eShop, priced at $19.99 / €19.99 each. These are faithful ports of the original Game Boy Advance remakes, complete with Kanto’s 151 Pokémon, the Sevii Islands side quests, and the classic soundtrack—compatible with both Switch and Switch 2 hardware.
Currently, there’s no physical cart outside Japan. Language options include English, French, and Spanish, but in some regions language builds may appear as separate purchases—double-check your eShop settings if you need multiple text languages.
These early- and mid-game exclusives matter if you’re aiming for a solo run or want to avoid hunting down a trade partner right away. Here’s where to find them:

| Version | Exclusive Pokémon | Location / Timing |
|---|---|---|
| FireRed | Ekans → Arbok | Route 4, early-game |
| FireRed | Oddish → Gloom → Vileplume | Celadon Jungle, post-Gym |
| FireRed | Growlithe → Arcanine | Route 7, after Nugget Bridge |
| LeafGreen | Sandshrew → Sandslash | Rock Tunnel area, early-game |
| LeafGreen | Bellsprout → Weepinbell → Victreebel | Route 24/25, post-Gym |
| LeafGreen | Vulpix → Ninetales | Pokémon Mansion, mid-to-late game |
A “living Dex” means owning every species in your National Pokédex. If you plan to go solo, your version pick shapes your early coverage:
If you miss a key exclusive, you’ll need a couch-side friend or await HOME support to complete your living Dex. Think ahead: do you want instant access to mature typings, or are you okay swapping later?

At launch, all trades and battles are local wireless through the in-game Wireless Club at Pokémon Centers. There’s no online battling or trading on day one. Early eShop listings briefly teased “support coming soon” for Pokémon HOME before that line vanished—most analysts now expect a later patch enabling one-way transfers out of FireRed and LeafGreen, with inbound transfers unlikely.
This uncertainty means you either coordinate local link-ups for version trades or wait for an official HOME clarification at the upcoming Pokémon Presents stream.

Japan gets an exclusive ¥19,800 (~$127) Special Edition bundle starting Feb. 28, 2026. It includes two download codes (one for each version, expiring July 31, 2026), replica GBA case art, and illuminated glass Poké Balls etched with Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. There’s no physical cartridge, and no word yet on an international release.

Choosing between FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch has real gameplay impact: local-only trades and murky HOME support mean version exclusives determine your early run and living Dex progress. Decide whether you need Poison and Fire early or prefer Ground, Grass, and Fire, and don’t miss the February 27 Pokémon Presents for final HOME transfer details.
