Gears of War: E-Day: How to Choose 4 Weapon Mods – Early Routes

FinalBoss6 min read
Yellow Hard Cases and some secondary objectives unlock campaign Weapon Mods, while green Supply Caches let you equip them. Additional general mod slots require their own Hard Case unlocks, so finding upgrades and making room for them are separate parts of building your loadout.

Prioritize Cover Brace and Forged Barrel in Act 2, Chapter 2: Hold the Line for a cover-based Lancer Mk1 loadout. Cover Brace improves accuracy while firing from cover; Forged Barrel provides a damage-focused upgrade. Their collection landmarks are the Octus Tribunal Muster Point and the passage south of the Warehouse District Supply Cache.

For close-range play, High Capacity Mag deserves more attention. For disruption with Carter’s Signature Gut-Puncher, collect Concussion Rounds in Victory Plaza during Act 2, Chapter 3: No Gear Left Behind. Choose around the weapon you actually use: an accuracy upgrade tied to cover has less value when you spend the encounter pushing into close range.

How Hard Cases, Supply Caches and mod slots work

Hard Cases are yellow containers found throughout campaign chapters. They contain Weapon Mods and, in some cases, additional mod slots. Some secondary objectives also award mods or Hard Cases, giving you another reason to complete a nearby optional task.

Supply Caches are green stations marked by large COG icons. Use them to swap weapons, replenish ammunition and change equipped mods. Finding a Hard Case adds an upgrade to your choices; visit a Supply Cache to put it into your loadout.

  • You start with one general mod slot. Additional general slots come from the relevant Hard Cases.
  • The Perfect Reload slot is separate. It changes the bonus from a successful active reload and does not provide another general-purpose slot.
  • Act 1 has no Hard Cases that unlock mod slots. It still contains Hard Cases, but the additional-slot progression begins in Act 2.

If Cover Brace and Forged Barrel are both collected but you only have the starting general slot, choose between them. Use Cover Brace when inaccurate rifle fire is costing you hits from cover; use Forged Barrel when damage is the priority. Equip the pair together once you have the required slot space.

Four Weapon Mods worth prioritizing

This priority order favors an early, cover-based rifle loadout and useful collection detours. A Gnasher-focused player should move High Capacity Mag higher; a player who rarely uses the Gut-Puncher can leave Concussion Rounds until that weapon becomes part of the loadout.

PriorityWeapon ModWeapon focusWhy choose it
1Cover BraceLancer Mk1; a separate Hammerburst pickup appears laterImproves accuracy while firing from cover. Most useful for controlled rifle fire at medium or longer range.
2Forged BarrelLancer Mk1A damage-focused upgrade with an early collection landmark close to the Warehouse District Supply Cache.
3Concussion RoundsCarter’s Signature Gut-PuncherSupports disruption and crowd control when close-range enemies put pressure on the squad.
4High Capacity MagGnasherReduces reload interruptions during repeated close-range engagements or successive enemy rushes.

High Capacity Mag also fits an expanded Gnasher setup alongside Full Auto and Skeleton Frame, provided you have enough general slots. Treat that as a close-range loadout choice rather than a reason to abandon rifle upgrades. The location routes below cover Cover Brace, Forged Barrel and Concussion Rounds; no High Capacity Mag pickup route is included.

Act 2, Chapter 2: Hold the Line — the two early rifle pickups

This chapter is the most useful early stop for the recommended Lancer Mk1 upgrades. Use the named landmarks to make local detours; the two locations do not establish a single uninterrupted route between them.

Forged Barrel: south of the Warehouse District Supply Cache

At the Warehouse District Supply Cache, handle your ammunition and weapon changes before leaving. From the cache, head south toward the passageway in front of the dumpsters. The yellow Hard Case containing Forged Barrel is in that passageway.

The cache is your starting landmark, and the dumpsters identify the passage to inspect. After collecting the case, use a Supply Cache to equip Forged Barrel; opening the container alone does not change your current weapon setup.

Cover Brace: Octus Tribunal Muster Point

Enter the Octus Tribunal Muster Point, south of Monroe Library. Check the left side of the road for the yellow Hard Case containing Cover Brace for the Lancer Mk1.

Use Monroe Library to orient yourself, then search within the muster-point area. Once collected, equip Cover Brace at a Supply Cache if your rifle engagements mostly happen from cover. Its accuracy benefit is tied to that firing position.

Act 2, Chapter 3: No Gear Left Behind — Concussion Rounds

Look inside Victory Plaza for the yellow Hard Case containing Concussion Rounds for Carter’s Signature Gut-Puncher. Search the plaza before continuing beyond it, then use the next Supply Cache to equip the mod and replenish ammunition.

This pickup is most relevant when you use the Gut-Puncher to interrupt close-range pressure. If the Lancer remains your main weapon, keep the rifle upgrades in place rather than rebuilding your loadout around a weapon you seldom fire.

Also check nearby secondary-objective areas before completing the chapter. These activities can award Hard Cases, including upgrades beyond the three early pickups covered here.

Act 3, Chapter 3: Last Foothold — Incendiary Ammo

Lancer Mk1 Incendiary Ammo is a secondary-objective reward in this chapter. Check the optional objectives rather than searching only for yellow containers: this upgrade comes through an objective reward.

At the next Supply Cache, review it alongside your existing Lancer mods and available slots. Collecting another ammunition effect does not expand the general-slot capacity of the weapon.

Act 3, Chapter 5: Desperate Times — Hammerburst Cover Brace

Inside the Hangar, search the second floor for the Hard Case containing Cover Brace for the Hammerburst. Check the upper level before leaving the building for the next objective.

This is the Hammerburst pickup, separate from the earlier Lancer Mk1 version. At a Supply Cache, select the Hammerburst and equip its matching Cover Brace mod for more accurate fire from cover.
