Grand Theft Auto VI’s boxed Standard Edition contains a download code, not a disc. You will need to download the game even if you buy it from a retailer and own a console with a disc drive. That makes access to your code — and the November 12 preload window — important when choosing where to preorder.

Release date, Germany unlock time and supported consoles
Grand Theft Auto VI launches worldwide on Thursday, November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Games is developing the game, with Take-Two Interactive publishing it.
The German digital-store release is listed for 00:00 CET on November 19 — midnight between Wednesday, November 18, and Thursday, November 19. Use the countdown attached to your purchased store listing when planning your start; a worldwide release date does not mean every territory unlocks simultaneously.
PS5 Pro can also run the game. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are outside the announced launch lineup, so owning either older console does not give you access to this release.
Standard and Ultimate Edition prices
Preorders opened on June 25, 2026. In Germany, the digital Standard Edition costs €79.99, while the Ultimate Edition costs €99.99 through the PlayStation and Xbox stores. These are October 2026 prices.
| Edition | German digital price | Contents | Purchase format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | €79.99 | Base game | Digital stores or a retail box containing a download code |
| Ultimate Edition | €99.99 | Base game plus additional vehicles, weapons, clothing and other in-game items | Digital PlayStation and Xbox stores |
The Ultimate Edition costs €20 more. Rockstar’s edition announcement does not itemize its complete bonus inventory, so check the contents on the purchase page before paying for a particular extra. Neither edition provides an earlier launch date or a longer preload window.
On the US PlayStation Store, the Standard Edition costs $79.99. That is a separate regional price, rather than a conversion of the German listing.
The German PlayStation Store offer includes one month of GTA+ with digital purchases made before November 20, 2026. The US PlayStation Standard Edition preorder listing also includes one month. Check your chosen storefront’s offer rather than assuming the promotion applies to every retailer or platform.
Preload starts November 12: how to prepare your download
Digital preorders can preload from Thursday, November 12, 2026, seven days before release. The window applies to Standard and Ultimate on both console platforms. An exact preload activation hour for every region and storefront has not been published.

- Make sure the game is attached to your console account. A digital-store preorder handles this through the purchase. For a boxed copy, you must receive and redeem its download code first; placing the retail order alone does not unlock the preload.
- Open Grand Theft Auto VI in your console’s game library from November 12. Start the download when the preload becomes available on your storefront.
- Wait for the November 19 unlock. Preloading transfers the game data in advance but does not let you start the single-player experience early.
Rockstar has not published the final download size, installed size or day-one patch size. There is so no exact storage target to plan around yet. Treat the size shown by your console when the download becomes available as more useful than an advance estimate.
Digital-only release: what the retail box actually provides
The retail Standard Edition supplies a code that unlocks a download. It provides no disc-based installation, so buying the box will not reduce the amount of game data you need to download. Once redeemed, the code also cannot be passed on as a reusable physical copy.
If preload access matters to you, check when the retailer will deliver the box or code. You cannot begin downloading through that purchase until you can redeem it. The Ultimate Edition is currently offered through the German digital console stores rather than as a boxed retail edition.
The installation requires internet access. Rockstar has not specified whether single-player gameplay requires a continuous connection.
PS5 Pro support and performance expectations
PS5 Pro compatibility appears in retail listings, while Rockstar lists the release under the PlayStation 5 platform family. There is no separate PS5 Pro edition to buy.
Rockstar has not detailed resolution targets, frame-rate modes, ray-tracing settings, HDR requirements or VRR support for the console versions. Specific PS5 Pro enhancements are also absent from the published technical details.
Do not upgrade from PS5 to PS5 Pro specifically for a promised 60fps mode in Grand Theft Auto VI. Neither a 60fps option nor a 30fps-only limit has been announced. Wait for the actual performance modes before deciding whether the hardware upgrade delivers the improvement you want.
PC release date and system requirements
As of October 2026, Rockstar has announced neither a PC version nor a PC release date. There are no official PC system requirements, and the console preorder does not provide a PC entitlement.

A claimed early-2027 PC window should not determine a purchase or hardware upgrade. PC players currently have no announced release window to work toward; console players should buy only if they want to play on the console they select.
Online multiplayer, Game Pass and PlayStation Plus
The November 19 release includes a single-player experience. Rockstar has not announced a launch date, feature set, pricing model or access requirements for a Grand Theft Auto VI online mode. Cross-play and cross-progression have not been announced either.
If your main reason to buy is playing with friends, the preorder currently gives you no multiplayer timetable to plan around. The included GTA+ promotion does not supply those missing details.
There is no announced day-one inclusion in Game Pass or PlayStation Plus. Budget for a separate game purchase rather than expecting an existing subscription to cover launch access.
Lucia, Jason and the Leonida setting
Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval are the playable protagonists. Their story follows a criminal couple whose hopes for a better life become entangled in a wider conspiracy after a robbery goes wrong. Rockstar has not detailed final character abilities or the rules for switching between them.
The setting is Vice City and the wider fictional state of Leonida, modeled on South Florida, with Vice City drawing on Miami. Other locations include the Leonida Keys, the wetlands of Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, the industrial area of Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.
Rockstar describes this as its largest and most immersive Grand Theft Auto game, but has not published a final map area or total mission count. Exact map-size ratios and completion-time estimates should not drive your edition choice.
Which edition should you buy for launch?
For the base single-player game, the €79.99 Standard Edition is the practical choice. Pay the additional €20 for Ultimate only if its listed extras appeal to you. If you choose a retail box, arrange access to its code in time for the preload; neither the packaging nor the higher-priced edition changes when you can start playing.
