GTA 6 Makes Carrying the Wrong Gun a Police Problem

Grand Theft Auto VI will make NPCs and police react to visible weapons before players aim or fire, turning gun carry state into a tactical decision.

Two concealed handguns can travel unnoticed, but a rifle in hand can clear a sidewalk and put police on alert. That is the practical shift behind Grand Theft Auto VI’s new weapon rules: the city will react to what protagonists Jason and Lucia visibly carry, not merely to shots fired or a gun pointed at someone.

Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson says GTA V’s old approach no longer fits GTA 6’s greater “resolution” and behavioral sophistication. In GTA V, pedestrians commonly ignored a gun until the player aimed it. GTA 6 changes that threshold. Pulling out even a handgun draws an immediate civilian response; people can cautiously move away rather than continuing their routines. Swinging a rifle around can make police antagonistic before a crime begins.

The distinction is not simply armed versus unarmed. Players can carry two long guns, with one slung visibly on the back and one held in an off-hand. A long gun on the back is treated far more casually than one gripped as if ready to fire. That leaves the trunk of a registered car as the lower-profile option for storing a loadout, instead of treating every trip through a shop or busy street as an open-carry excursion.

That constraint feeds directly into stealth and escape planning. Drawing a weapon too early can create witnesses, scatter civilians, and bring police attention before a job has properly started. Masks, changed clothes and hairstyles, a different car, and separating from a partner can all help disrupt recognition afterward. Police awareness also considers physical descriptions, clothing, CCTV sightings, and vehicle or partner context, while a criminal-profile system adjusts around player behavior.

The wanted system is set to use six stars, the first return of that maximum since 2009’s Chinatown Wars. Exact escalation thresholds remain unclear, but the useful rule is already simple: keep weapons concealed or slung until the moment a confrontation requires them. GTA 6 is scheduled to launch November 19.
