Guide

After spending nearly 10 hours painstakingly figuring out how to capture my first giant Échoué (the notorious absorbers) in Death Stranding 2, I can confidently say this is one of the game’s most satisfying – but easily missable – features. The in-game hints are cryptic, and if you’re trophy-hunting for “Le meilleur ami des Échoués,” you’ve probably realized there’s little room for error. I wasted hours experimenting, missing captures, and learning which tactics actually work versus what just gets you trampled. If you want to recruit these monster allies efficiently and reliably, this is the step-by-step guide I wish I’d found on day one.

Why Capture Giant Échoués (Absorbers)?

Capturing an Échoué absorber isn’t just a flex – it fundamentally alters combat and opens up unique strategies in Death Stranding 2. Summoning an absorber can trivialize some of the game’s hardest encounters, and getting the rare “Best Friend of the Échoués” trophy is a badge most players miss on their first try. But it’s tricky: one mistake, and the giant Échoué is gone. Here’s how to not blow your shot.

What You Need Before You Start

  • Main Story Progress: You must reach the end of Main Order 033 (unlocking the Metagenomist).
  • Capture EX Grenade: Crafted using the schematic received after connecting the Metagenomist to the chiral network.
  • At least one regular EX Grenade or chronobiote: These help slow the absorber for an easier toss.
  • Ammo & Weapons: Bring blood-based or anti-BT weapons for reducing absorber health.
  • Chiral Crystals: Needed for absorber summoning (once captured).

Pro-Tip: Double-check your inventory before leaving a hub. If you forget to equip a capture grenade, you’ll have to backtrack — learned this the hard way more than once.

Step-by-Step: Capturing a Giant Échoué (Absorber)

  1. Trigger the Absorber Fight:
Absorber Échoués don’t randomly spawn until after Order 033. You’ll encounter your first official one as a story event (usually an octopoid, post-Order 034). They often ambush you in high-BT zones or during scripted missions — you’ll know when you see the “massive tentacles from the tar.”
  2. Reduce its Health to Red:
Use blood grenades, the anti-BT handgun, or the bola with blood bags attached. Don’t use standard weaponry — it won’t phase absorbers. The goal is to slowly chip down its health until you see the HP gauge turn red. Do NOT overkill: If you go past red, the absorber dies and you must reload/retry. I lost at least two attempts because I panicked and kept firing!
  3. Disable or Distract for a Clear Shot:
This is where a regular EX Grenade or a chronobiote makes things infinitely easier. Chronobiote slows time universally, giving you a huge window for an accurate throw. If you have no chronobiotes, toss an EX Grenade at the absorber’s mouth (for octopoid types, aim at the mass of tentacles at the front), which often stuns or slows it briefly.
  4. Switch to Capture EX Grenade and Aim:
Cycle your right d-pad to switch to the Capture EX Grenade. R2 holds it ready, aim with L2. The grenade only works if it lands inside the absorber’s open mouth. Watch for the beast’s “roar” animation — it will open its mouth wide before attack. This is your golden moment.
  5. Toss the Capture EX Grenade:
Throw it directly into the gaping mouth. Too early or to the side and the capture fails! Take your time — unless the absorber is aggroed, your first throw has the best odds. I missed my first few attempts by panicking. The grenade will explode on contact, and the absorber should immediately die, leaving behind a single white chiral crystal instead of the usual gold drops.
  6. Pick Up the Absorber Crystal:
This special crystal is the proof of capture. You’ll also get a huge chiral crystal bounty. Once you have it, the absorber is added to your summonable arsenal.

Success Indicator: Absorbers only leave one white crystal upon successful capture. If you see multiple gold ones, you botched it — reload and try again.

Using Your Captured Absorber in Combat

  1. Access the Quick Tool Menu: D-Pad Right brings up the summon menu in combat.
  2. Select Your Captured Absorber: You’ll see it listed among tools. Summoning costs chiral crystals.
  3. Use Against Giant BTs and Some Bosses: Absorber summons only work in boss-tier fights or against other Échoués absorbers. Each summon lasts up to 3 minutes or until defeated.

Warning: Summoning costs a hefty chunk of chiral crystals, but it’s refunded (and then some) if you win the fight. Don’t be stingy — the payoff is worth it. Every time I tried to save my crystals, I actually made later captures harder.

Common Pitfalls and Troubleshooting (Based on My Failures)

  • Forgetting to Equip the Capture Grenade: Always check your loadout before a suspected absorber ambush. Forgetting means a full trek back for crafting.
  • Over-damaging the Absorber: Don’t use multi-hit weapons near red HP. Pause between shots and count health chunks.
  • Throwing Too Early/Late: The window for the mouth opening is tighter than it seems. Wait for the roar animation; if you miss, immediately use a slowing device and reposition.
  • Trying to Capture an Absorber You Already Own: The game won’t let you duplicate — you <> and miss out on a possible new species.
  • Summoned Absorber Deals the Last Blow: Don’t let your pet kill the one you’re hoping to capture. Dismiss or recall it if the target is getting too low!

If This Doesn’t Work, Try:

  • Retreating and reloading the area or save if you botch the health/share window.
  • Experimenting with stuns and slows for other absorber shapes (not all have the same weak spot, but the mouth/tentacle area is generally the target).
  • Checking your Inventory → Equipment view for special icons — successfully captured absorbers appear with a unique mark.

Advanced Tips to Make Captures Easier

  • Chronobiotes are King: These rare slow-time grenades trivialize timing. Always carry at least one for every absorber hunt.
  • Bait and Kite: Trigger the absorber’s roar by moving in-and-out of its aggro range. Once the animation starts, back up and prep your throw for a clean hit.
  • Stack Vitals & Gear: Absorber battles are long — bring extra ladders and PCCs to improvise cover, and at least two blood bags (auto-refill for anti-BT weapons).
  • Practice with Story-Event Absorbers: Early-game story bosses are less punishing than post-game wild absorbers — nail your technique here first.
  • Playstyle Adaptation: Aggressive players should go in for quick stuns, while cautious types should circle, use terrain, and wait for a safe throw window.

Efficiency Pro-Tip: Once you capture one absorber species, it pays to use it for fighting the next absorber. Enemy Échoués will focus on the summoned ally, leaving Sam free to attack unimpeded. Just ensure you command your pet to withdraw before the target is too weak, or you risk losing a capture opportunity.

TL;DR Key Steps

  • Reach chapter 8, Order 033/unlock Metagenomist + Capture EX Grenade schematic.
  • Fight a giant Échoué absorber (story or wild spawn).
  • Reduce HP to red — without overkilling.
  • Slow absorber with EX or chronobiote as needed.
  • Toss capture grenade inside the open mouth during roar.
  • Collect the white chiral crystal; you now have an absorber ally for boss fights.
  • Summon from D-Pad Right → Quick Menu for future battles.

If you’re going for 100% completion or planning to play on higher difficulties, mastering absorber capture is a huge advantage. Expect to spend 10-20 minutes per capture attempt, especially as you refine your timing. Stick with it — these kaiju allies are absolutely worth the hassle, and few things in Death Stranding 2 are as fun as commanding a BT on your own terms. Good luck, fellow porter!
