Why Glace à l’eau Matters (and Why Unlocking It Isn’t Obvious)

After over 30 hours experimenting with Disney Dreamlight Valley’s recipes, I realized Glace à l’eau wasn’t just “another dessert.” It’s one of the most energy-efficient 3-star recipes (restoring 687 energy and selling for 265 coins) and a great mid-game milestone. But unlike other desserts, getting those three ingredients can be a confusing maze if you haven’t followed several character questlines or upgraded the right tools. I wasted days hunting for shortcuts-here’s how to skip my mistakes and make your first Glace à l’eau smoothly.

Step 1: Unlock Remy’s Restaurant-Your Gateway to Dessert Recipes

I spent way too long checking random kitchens for recipe unlocks. You will not find Glace à l’eau anywhere until you bring Rémy (from Ratatouille) to your village and open his restaurant. Here’s how:

  • Enter the Dream Castle and spend 3,000 Dreamlight to unlock the Ratatouille Realm.
  • Finish Rémy’s Ratatouille questline-stick closely to Rémy’s recipe prompts (I failed three times misjudging soup ingredients, so re-read what he says!)
  • Once he joins your valley, unlock and upgrade Rémy’s restaurant for full menu access.

Pro tip: Keep giving daily favorite gifts to Rémy from the start, as you’ll need friendship level 10 to unlock the full Glace à l’eau process.

Step 2: Unlock WALL-E and Elsa for Essential Ingredients

This is where beginner players get tripped up. Glace à l’eau isn’t just about fruit—it demands two rare ingredients that need both WALL-E and Elsa:

  • Open the WALL-E realm in the Dream Castle (3,000 Dreamlight). Complete his quests until he settles in the valley.
  • Unlock Elsa by opening her Frozen Realm (4,000 Dreamlight), then get her to move in as well.
  • You’ll need to unlock the Frosted Heights biome (10,000 Dreamlight) to farm snow—this took me a full play session, so don’t wait too long to start prepping Dreamlight from early on.

Don’t get stuck like I did: You cannot gather snow or shatter ice until you upgrade your pickaxe via Elsa’s level 6 friendship quest. Prioritize leveling her friendship early by hanging out and gifting daily, otherwise this step can stall you for days.

Step 3: Prepare the Hardest Ingredient—Crushed Ice

This is the single biggest bottleneck for Glace à l’eau. I failed here twice because I didn’t realize just how many quests and crafting steps are involved. Here’s the most efficient path:

  • Raise Elsa’s friendship to level 6—trigger her “Breaking the Ice” quest to upgrade your pickaxe so you can smash ice rocks in Frosted Heights for snow.
  • Meanwhile, get Rémy to friendship level 10 by escorting him and giving favorite gifts. This unlocks the “An Unknown Flavor” quest for Glace à l’eau.
  • For Rémy’s quest, gather:
    • 3 Purified Night Shards: Each crafted from 5 Night Shards and 1 Dream Shard (collect by digging glowing spots and removing dark thorns). This took me about an hour if you focus daily.
    • 15 Snowballs: Break ice in Frosted Heights or dig there (by this point, with maxed pickaxe, each ice rock gave me several snowballs).
  • Visit WALL-E—he’ll crush the shards into powder for you (don’t forget this step, or you’ll be stuck on the crafting menu).
  • Combine the powder and snowballs at any crafting table to make Crushed Ice.

Warning: I accidentally wasted my first batch of Night Shards by selling them—always store 20+ for rare crafts like this!

Step 4: Secure Sugarcane—Fastest Farming Options

Sugarcane is one of the simplest ingredients, but only if you unlock Dingo’s Stall on Dazzle Beach. Don’t do what I did and run laps looking for wild canes—it’s not a wild item! Here’s how to get it fast:

  • Head to Dazzle Beach and fix Goofy’s stall there (costs a bit of Star Coins at first).
  • Buy Sugarcane directly for quick results, or buy sugarcane seeds for a budget option (they grow in 7 minutes—don’t waste time with other crops).
  • If you’ve already upgraded WALL-E’s garden, sometimes sugarcane pops up in the rotation, saving coins.

Efficiency tip: Plant 10-20 sugarcane at once for later recipes; you’ll be glad you stocked up once other desserts unlock!

Step 5: Gather the Right Fruit—And Which Ones to Avoid

I originally tossed in apples or lemons (they’re everywhere), but only some fruits yield the highest value and energy for Glace à l’eau. Here’s what you should know:

  • You can use nearly any fruit except apple or lemon (these don’t count for the “special” Glace à l’eau variant, and sometimes don’t tick the recipe box).
  • Best fruits for max energy and value:
    • Raspberry: Plaza, Peaceful Meadow
    • Banana: Dazzle Beach, Peaceful Meadow
    • Blueberry: Dazzle Beach, Forest of Valor
    • Gooseberry: Frosted Heights
    • Coconut/Passion Fruit: Sunlit Plateau (after quest unlocks)
  • Most fruits respawn in 20-40 mins; cycle between biomes to always have some in stock.

Pro-tip: If you want to stack up on energy, use berries since combos with sugarcane push the energy restoration close to 700 per Glace à l’eau.

Step 6: Craft Your First Glace à l’eau (and Sell or Eat for Huge Gains)

Now for the satisfying part! Head to any stove (I always use Rémy’s restaurant since you can access extra recipes there) and combine:

  • 1x Crushed Ice
  • 1x Sugarcane
  • 1x Chosen Fruit (not apple/lemon)

Each Glace à l’eau restores a massive 687 energy (with some fruits) and sells for about 265 coins—one of the best 3-star returns for the ingredient cost.

Common mistake: If Glace à l’eau doesn’t show as “new” in your collection, double-check you used a valid fruit and not an excluded one. If it still doesn’t tick off, try a different fruit from a further biome (Gooseberry/Blueberry worked for me).

Advanced Tips and Troubleshooting

  • If you’re out of Night Shards, prioritize mining in all biomes daily. Extra Night Shards are harder to come by as your valley gets cleaner.
  • Snowballs stockpile fast in Frosted Heights—bring a mining partner for double drops.
  • If stuck waiting on quest triggers (friendship/character), work daily activities: gift, hang out, cook errands with Rémy and Elsa—avoid burn-out by alternating tasks.
  • For huge energy returns, eat Glace à l’eau before big biome clearing sessions—it’ll keep you sprinting and digging much longer.

TL;DR Recap—Key Steps to Success

  • Unlock and level up Rémy, Elsa, and WALL-E ASAP
  • Upgrade your tools via Elsa’s quests for snow/ice
  • Farm Night Shards and Snowballs for crushed ice
  • Harvest sugarcane from Dazzle Beach (buy/plant)
  • Pick the right fruit (avoid apples/lemons)
  • Craft at Rémy’s kitchen and enjoy huge energy boosts

If you follow this order, you’ll save yourself days of backtracking and unlock one of Dreamlight Valley’s best all-purpose desserts early. Good luck—and don’t make my mistake of selling your Night and Dream Shards! If you hit a wall, just rotate daily quests and keep cycling kitchen gifts for fast friendship and resource growth. You’ll be mixing up Glace à l’eau like a five-star chef before you know it.
