War Thunder’s latest Spearhead update isn’t just another content drop—it finally kills the long-standing naval repair exploit with a streamlined damage-control system, hooks you with five universal daily backups, trims anti-air dominance, and spruces up maps. If you’ve been on the fence about logging back in, this patch is the nudge you’ve been waiting for.
Gaijin’s new “damage control” replaces the old manual repair micromanagement. You pick one of three presets—firefighting focus, module-first, or balanced—and the game auto-handles repairs and flooding. You can still toggle manual mode, but the key is you no longer benefit from ignoring damage because timers stack weirdly. That exploit was “antithetical to gameplay,” as Gaijin puts it, and it’s good to see the fix.
This change shifts naval matches away from spreadsheet-style min-maxing and back toward actual ship-versus-ship tactics. Newer vessels get more nuanced options, so there’s still room for specialized builds. Sure, some will grumble about “less agency,” but rewarding edge-case exploits at the expense of real naval pushes wasn’t fun. If this leads to fewer stalemates and more decisive flanking moves, naval will finally feel like less of a niche within a niche.
Now you get five universal backups per day—use them or lose them. These free respawns work on any vehicle in any mode, so you’re not locked out after a single death in a favorite tank or jet. It’s a slick quality-of-life tweak that gently nudges daily logins without turning into a grindfest.

Expect matches to open up. Ground Realistic Battles might see bolder MBT pushes, while high-tier helicopter and jet pilots get a safety net for bad runs. Economists will note that this softens repair bills without upending the shop. In short, you can take more risks knowing you’ve got five do-overs waiting.
Beyond backups, Gaijin also tossed in a slew of fresh metal that’s worth your time.
The AH-56 Cheyenne is the crown jewel here—War Thunder’s first compound helicopter. It flies faster than your average chopper, sports “Mighty Mouse” rockets, TOW missiles, a 30 mm cannon, and your choice of grenade launcher or minigun. Master speed and angle management, and you’ll feel unstoppable; hover like a stock Huey, and you’ll get chewed up.

France’s EBRC Jaguar brings modern recon flair with high speed and stealthy flanking. Britain’s Chieftain 900 answers long-time calls for a beefier Rank VI medium tank—expect engine power that finally matches the gun. Aviation fans get the quirky twin-boom Fokker D.XXIII, a WWII oddity with playful handling and a silhouette that’ll surprise opponents. Naval commanders can deploy the USS Oregon City or Japan’s Nagato super-dreadnought—heavy hitters that pair nicely with the new damage-control system.
Stalingrad now glitters with updated snow, ice, and tank-track details, and Carpathians has fresh assets throughout. Eastern Europe and both Ardennes variants also got visual polish. But layouts remain intact, so your favorite choke points and sightlines are still there—just shinier. Visual fidelity helps immersion, but I’m watching to see if the actual gameplay flow changes or if it’s still the same dance on a new floor.

New tutorial missions cover flares and guided bombs—worth a look if high-tier air put you off. AA guns now have shorter range and less pinpoint accuracy, so attackers and helos finally get breathing room. That means CAS (close air support) will feel stronger, and teams that ignore SPAA (self-propelled anti-aircraft) will pay the price. Gaijin also rolled out numerous balance tweaks, so don’t assume your go-to loadout behaves identically—test in a custom match before diving into sweaty battles.
Spearhead doesn’t revolutionize War Thunder, but it smartly tackles a long-ignored exploit, hands players free daily backups, and spices up the vehicle roster. Coupled with AA adjustments and map polish, it’s a well-rounded, player-first update. If you’ve been on hiatus, there’s no better moment to jump back in and see what’s changed.
