Quadratum’s design problem is scale: a realistic city cannot function like the series’ older, compact world maps without turning movement into downtime. The new D23 footage addresses that directly, keeping Sora in motion across streets, walls and skyscraper-height spaces while he combines Keyblade attacks and magic against a new Heartless variant. The important signal is not simply that Sora can climb buildings; it is that vertical repositioning is being framed as part of an encounter rather than a separate traversal mode.
That changes the expected rhythm of Kingdom Hearts IV. Routes through Quadratum can support approach angles above or around enemies, rapid exits from crowded fights, and more varied paths between objectives. Square Enix has not detailed the inputs, progression rules or puzzle use behind these actions, and it has not defined whether Quadratum is the primary overworld, a hub, or one large zone among several. But the four-minute extended trailer makes clear that the city is intended as an active gameplay space, not a realistic backdrop for cutscenes.

The D23 material also widens the playable cast. Mickey, Donald and Goofy are shown in playable footage, with Donald and Goofy visiting Hades in an Underworld sequence. Hades states that Sora is not there, separating his situation in Quadratum from a conventional death. Mickey researches material in Scala ad Caelum that may help save him, while Riku appears in Quadratum and Xigbar confronts Xehanort there. These scenes establish parallel activity around Sora, though the final game’s character-switching structure, party roles and segment lengths remain undisclosed.

Disney and Square Enix also confirmed a Coco world tied to the Lost Master Arc. Its Keyblade has a guitar at its center, with skull, bone and flower details. Vali and the phrase “Dandelion Dispatch” appear in the trailer material, without a full explanation of their story functions.

Kingdom Hearts IV is scheduled for late 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store; no price has been announced.
