League of Legends Classic: How to Get Refunds Before Shutdown

FinalBoss5 min read
League of Legends Classic becomes unavailable on January 6, 2027, with qualifying Classic-only content receiving RP refunds. Eligible Classic Pass Act I and Collector’s Box buyers have a shorter, 30-day window to request a refund to their original payment method.

Request a refund through Riot Player Support if you bought Classic Pass Act I directly with cash and want the money returned to your original payment method. The request window runs for 30 days from the October 15, 2026 notice — approximately November 14, 2026. Waiting for the automatic RP refund does not submit that request for you.

Which Classic purchases receive automatic RP refunds?

Riot is refunding Classic-specific cosmetics that will no longer be usable. The detailed portrait refunds below are automatic, with credits due by November 30, 2026. You do not need to submit an individual refund request for these standard RP credits.

Classic contentAutomatic refund
Classic Portraits bought directly from the storeThe RP amount originally spent on those portraits.
Classic Portraits acquired through paid Classic Pass Act I200 RP for each Classic Portrait acquired.
Classic Portraits included in the League of Legends Classic Collector’s BoxThe portion of the purchase price attributed to those portraits, returned in RP.

The important distinction for pass owners is the calculation: 200 RP per acquired portrait is a portrait refund, rather than a return of the entire Classic Pass Act I purchase price.

Classic Pass Act I: requesting a payment-method refund

The payment-method option applies to players who purchased Classic Pass Act I directly with cash. Submit the request to Riot Player Support within the 30-day notice window, and specify that you want the refund returned to the original payment method rather than accepting the standard RP credit.

Use approximately November 14, 2026 as the planning deadline, but check the exact cutoff displayed in Riot’s support interface for your notice date and time zone. The January shutdown date does not extend this request window, and the November 30 automatic-credit deadline is a separate date.

Collector’s Box refunds and the 12,212 RP option

Eligible Collector’s Box purchasers can also request a refund to their original payment method through Riot Player Support within the same 30-day window. That request is separate from the automatic partial RP refund assigned to the box’s Classic Portraits.

If you want to keep the physical Collector’s Box, Riot offers another route: request removal of its associated digital content in exchange for 12,212 RP. This requires surrendering the digital content, so consider whether you want to retain those entitlements before requesting it.

The 12,212 RP amount belongs to that digital-content removal option. It is not the standard portrait-only credit, and it is not a cash refund.

When Classic closes and the pass stops working

Classic remains playable through the rest of Season 3, then becomes unavailable on January 6, 2027. The Classic Pass has a precise cutoff just before that:

  • January 5, 2027, at 11:59 p.m. PT: Classic Pass deactivates.
  • January 6, 2027: Classic becomes unavailable.

Spend your Classic Pass Coins and complete relevant Classic Account progression before the January 5 pass cutoff. Do not use “January 6” as your pass-spending deadline: the pass stops operating at the specified Pacific Time cutoff.

What changes in patch 26.21?

From patch 26.21, the Classic store will contain only champions, runes, and rune pages. The Act II Classic Battle Pass will have a free track only, with no paid progression track.

Players on the Japan and MENA servers face an earlier matchmaking restriction: Classic will be limited to custom matches beginning with patch 26.21. That regional change does not move the overall January shutdown date, but it changes how those players can access matches during the remaining season.

Why Classic is ending, and whether it will return

Riot says most Classic players have returned to other parts of League of Legends. Classic launched in July, and the October announcement came roughly three months later; the mode remains available until January rather than ending immediately after that announcement.

Riot describes January as the end of Classic’s “current run.” A future event remains a possibility, but Riot has not announced another season, a relaunch schedule, or an event date.
