This caught my attention because Marathon’s closed alpha last year left a lot of players unsure-now Bungie is opening the doors wide with a Server Slam designed to stress-test systems and let everyone see how far the new Tau Ceti arena has come. If you were curious but cautious after the alpha, this is the free, no-signup chance to jump back in and earn starter rewards while helping Bungie find the rough edges.

The Marathon Server Slam runs from Thursday, February 26, 2026 at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm GMT until Monday, March 2, 2026 at the same time. It’s free on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S—you don’t need to sign up or pre-order. Just download the Marathon test client from your platform’s storefront when the event goes live.

Bungie confirmed crossplay and cross-save are enabled for the Server Slam. That means you can jump between PC and console and keep the session state on your account during the test. that said, Bungie has signaled that test progression is unlikely to carry over to the full release—so think of this as a way to earn cosmetic, account-wide bonuses and learn the game rather than to advance a long-term save.
Those Arrival Caches are pitched as starter loot to jump-start your account when the full game launches. They won’t replace long-term progression, but they do reward players who show up early and help test systems.

Bungie’s Server Slams are pragmatic: they create real-world load that private alphas can’t replicate. Last year’s closed alpha exposed areas that needed work—matchmaking, desync under heavy load, and balance roughness. A public stress test with crossplay enabled lets Bungie collect telemetry across far more hardware and network configurations.
From a player standpoint, this matters for three reasons. First, it’s the best way to judge Marathon’s netcode and matchmaking at scale. Second, cross-save means you can test on multiple platforms without losing cosmetics. Third, the reward structure nudges you to spend enough time in the test to give meaningful feedback while keeping long-term progression gated for launch.

There are caveats. Expect limited content and temporary systems: not everything will be present, and items or progression may be reset. Also watch for cheating mitigations—public tests are prime targets, and how Bungie responds in real time will be informative. Finally, server-side fixes after this Server Slam will influence whether the launch window remains unchanged.
Marathon’s Server Slam runs Feb 26-Mar 2, 2026, and is free on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. No pre-order or signup—download the test client. Crossplay and cross-save are active; progression likely won’t carry to launch. Play to earn an emblem, background, and tiered Arrival Caches at Runner levels 10 and 30. Use the time to test netcode, get map experience, and help Bungie iron out launch-critical issues.
