Marvel Rivals Season 10 Drops to 1 Hero, and Ranked Bans Change Too

For the first time across eight seasons and roughly 17 months, Marvel Rivals is moving away from its two-hero seasonal cycle. Season 10, launching September 11 at 9:00 AM UTC, adds Gorr the God Butcher as the game’s 54th playable character, and there is no second mid-season hero planned for October.

Season 10 is trading a second hero for breathing room

That slowdown matters more than it first sounds. Two new kits per season created a steady stream of interactions for NetEase to tune across an already large roster. Season 10 instead concentrates its launch around Gorr, a new map, and broad hero adjustments affecting about 70% of the cast. In other words, this is less a “small” season than a compressed one: less roster expansion, more pressure on balance and structure.

NetEase has framed the one-hero cadence as a Season 10 decision rather than a blanket promise for every future season. That distinction is important. The message here is not that Marvel Rivals is permanently becoming a one-hero game every season; it is that this season is deliberately cutting the usual second character so the team can get its arms around the meta instead of feeding it another major variable in October.

Season 10 will also continue its Path to Doomsday event in later phases, with additional game modes planned and more details due closer to the start of Season 10.5. So the content cadence is not stopping. It is being rearranged.

Gold III+ ranked is getting a much cleaner ban phase

That makes the Competitive ban revision more consequential. In Competitive, the game’s ranked mode, players at Gold III and above will no longer choose bans simultaneously. The old format allowed both teams to ban the same hero, which could effectively waste part of the draft. Season 10 replaces that with a fixed alternating order: Team A bans one hero, Team B bans two heroes, Team A bans two heroes, then Team B bans one.

The result is six distinct bans per match. Players vote on each selection, duplicate bans are blocked, and a banned hero is unavailable to both teams for the full game. Because the bans now happen in sequence rather than at the same time, each removal changes the next decision. It is a serialized draft, meaning teams see one step before committing to the next.

That should make ranked lobbies more readable. Teams can react to an early removal, protect a composition by taking out its strongest counter, or deny an opponent’s likely pairing without gambling on a blind overlap. More importantly, six non-duplicating bans means the draft is doing more actual work every match.

Your ranked prep list now needs a backup plan

For ranked players, the immediate planning change is straightforward: prepare deeper hero pools rather than assuming a single comfort pick survives draft. The new system does not apply below Gold III, so lower-ranked Competitive players will not feel that pressure right away. Everyone at Gold III and above, though, should treat Season 10 as the moment when draft prep starts mattering more than stubborn loyalty to one main.

A practical checklist is pretty simple. Practice at least one reliable backup per role. Review which matchups become more important when bans are revealed one by one. Queue with a clear vote priority so your team is not improvising every ban. And if your best hero tends to attract attention, spend some time on the second and third options now instead of learning them in a live ranked loss.

What matters next is whether the slower hero pipeline and six-ban draft produce a more stable meta before Marvel Rivals swings back toward a larger release cadence. Season 10 is not arriving with less to think about. It is arriving with fewer new faces and a lot more draft responsibility.
