The Modern Warfare 4 beta changes that workflow in two useful ways: it prepares shaders before launch and allows more PC data patches to apply without demanding a restart.
The first beta leg begins on August 21, immediately after Call of Duty: Next. Shader pre-loading begins at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET / 5 PM BST for the beta rollout. Infinity Ward and Beenox are clearly aiming at the friction that made a routine seasonal update feel like an appointment. There is no promised benchmark figure for minutes saved, but moving work out of the game’s opening path is the correct engineering target.
The buyer-and-player answer: PC players should expect fewer visible shader-install screens and fewer restart prompts when a data patch is already downloaded before launch. They should not expect every update to become seamless, especially if a patch arrives while the game is running.

Shader compilation is necessary work. Modern Warfare needs graphics pipelines prepared for a specific combination of GPU, driver, graphics settings, effects, maps, and rendering features. When that preparation happens late — or continues while a player is entering their first matches — it can produce the ugly combination PC players know too well: a blocked menu followed by uneven frame-times once gameplay begins.
The beta’s solution is to start the job after download completion and before the game is launched. The bigger promise sits beyond the beta. From Modern Warfare 4’s full release, the intended model is one primary shader compilation rather than a full repeat after each major seasonal update. That would directly address the behavior that made Modern Warfare III updates feel heavier than their download size suggested. Modern Warfare III Season 4 itself does not receive a documented retrofit for this system, so players staying on that title should still expect the older compile-after-update flow.
The second fix is less flashy but arguably more valuable for a multiplayer game. Modern Warfare 4 on PC allows data patches to apply without a restart in most situations across Battle.net, Steam, and Xbox on PC. That removes a pointless two-step launch sequence where a player opens the client, receives an update notice, closes the client, and then opens it again.
There is a firm exception: a data patch that goes live while the game is already running can still force a restart. If the player is kicked out for that update, the restart remains required before the new data can take effect. This is sensible. A live multiplayer client cannot safely swap every active configuration or content reference mid-session, particularly when playlists, maps, progression rules, or matchmaking data may be involved.
That limitation matters because “fewer restarts” can sound broader than it is. The beta reduces restart-required patch instances; it does not convert Call of Duty into a fully hot-patched game. Full client updates and security-related changes may also carry requirements beyond a standard data patch. The proper expectation is a smoother launch path when updates land before a session, not immunity from every interruption during a session.
PlayStation 5 receives the updated restart behavior in the beta, while Xbox Series X|S still requires a restart for data patches during testing. The plan is to reduce those Xbox restart cases for the full release. Nintendo Switch 2 continues to require restarts during both the beta and launch window. PC is therefore receiving the most complete version of this particular quality-of-life change right now, with Battle.net holding the best-case shader-preload path.

Players should also avoid confusing background preparation with a free lunch. Pre-loading has to consume some combination of CPU time, GPU activity, system memory, and disk access somewhere. It is simply being scheduled at a less annoying point in the process. For a desktop with a fast NVMe drive, that trade is easy to appreciate. On a laptop running on battery or a system already busy with downloads and background tasks, it is worth letting the preload finish before judging menu responsiveness.
The shader and patch improvements only matter if the game permits access. Modern Warfare 4 requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot to be enabled for PC online modes. A PC that fails either check can be restricted from the beta’s online play, regardless of its CPU, graphics card, or storage speed.

Secure Boot needs extra care on older or heavily customized PCs. A Windows installation using Legacy BIOS mode and an MBR system drive may need conversion to UEFI and GPT before Secure Boot can operate correctly. Players who only open Call of Duty occasionally will notice the restart reduction more than shader behavior; a downloaded data patch can be applied before launch instead of interrupting it. Competitive players and performance-sensitive PC owners should care more about the shader change, because the goal is to reduce the compilation-related stalls that can contaminate early matches after a big update.
