Switch 2’s introduction to the Forbidden Lands begins with Monster Hunter Wilds’ opening campaign, before Ascendance’s expansion story. The free Prologue Demo launches on the Nintendo eShop on October 19, 2026 in North America and October 20 in the UK, Europe and Japan. Use it to settle your character designs, compare weapons and assess the opening on Switch 2 before committing to the full game.

Where the demo ends: Chapter 1-3, “To the Forest”
The demo takes you through the beginning of the Forbidden Lands campaign, ending at Chapter 1-3, “To the Forest.” That numbering matters: it does not mean the demo contains three complete chapters.
This gives you a connected introduction to the campaign, including character creation and early hunting. It is enough to judge whether the opening’s controls, presentation and story delivery appeal to you. It cannot show how later monsters, equipment progression or endgame systems develop.
For a pre-order decision, separate those questions. Enjoying the opening is a useful reason to continue; reaching the demo’s endpoint tells you little about the challenge or variety waiting much later.
What to try before reaching the story limit
The demo includes the full hunter character-creation menu, Palico customization and access to all 14 weapon types. Those are its strongest opportunities to make decisions that matter beyond the opening scenes.
- Create the hunter you want to continue with. The full creation menu lets you work through your character’s appearance before starting the campaign. With save-data carryover available, there is a practical reason to make this your intended hunter rather than a throwaway design.
- Customize your Palico during the opening setup. Your companion has its own creation options, so include both characters in your preparation for the full release.
- Compare weapons before judging the combat. All 14 weapon types are available to test. If your first choice feels awkward, try another before deciding that the game’s controls do not suit you. Use the comparison to identify which weapon’s movement, attack timing and recovery feel most comfortable.
The useful goal is to leave with a weapon you want to learn. Sampling the entire roster can reveal preferences, but the opening campaign cannot demonstrate every weapon’s long-term equipment options or how it performs against later monsters.

What carries over to the December 4 release
Demo save data can transfer into the full Switch 2 version of Monster Hunter Wilds, launching December 4, 2026. Your opening progress can so become the start of your full-game playthrough rather than something you must repeat after purchase.
Keep your demo save if you intend to continue. Carryover makes the character-creation work and early campaign progress useful preparation, but it does not extend the demo beyond Chapter 1-3. Further progression requires the full game.
The December 4 date belongs to the full Switch 2 game associated with this demo. The Prologue Demo does not provide access to Ascendance’s expansion campaign.
Local co-op works; online hunting is outside the demo
The multiplayer distinction is the most important limitation to understand before arranging a session. Nearby players can connect their Switch 2 systems locally, with each participant needing access to the demo. Friends playing remotely cannot join through online multiplayer.
| How you want to play | Demo support | What you can evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | Supported | The opening campaign, character creation and weapon handling without organizing a group. |
| Local co-op | Supported with nearby Switch 2 systems and demo access for each participant | Cooperative hunting with friends in the same location. |
| Online with remote friends | Not supported | Online matchmaking and remote multiplayer must wait for the full game. |
For a household or group that already meets to play, local co-op is a meaningful purchase test. For a group spread across different locations, the demo answers individual questions about weapons and the opening campaign, but leaves the shared online experience unanswered.

Keep those results separate: a successful local session gives you experience of hunting together locally. It provides no basis for judging online matchmaking or connection quality.
What the opening tells you about Ascendance’s difficulty
Capcom’s approach to Ascendance is to keep the expansion story accessible while placing harder challenges in endgame content for experienced hunters. That makes an opening-only demo a limited guide to the difficulty veterans ultimately care about.
If the early campaign feels comfortable, avoid projecting that difficulty across the expansion. Equally, the demo cannot establish whether Ascendance’s endgame will deliver the challenge you want. Its useful evidence concerns how the game feels to control and how the campaign begins; specific endgame encounters and tuning sit beyond its scope.
