Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles 2
Destroy demons with the power of forged bonds! Tanjiro Kamado's battle will once again unfold…
This caught my attention because SEGA and CyberConnect2 just gave Demon Slayer fans exactly what they’ve been asking for since the first game: Muzan Kibutsuji, the big bad himself, is playable right now in Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles 2. He’s unlockable via a free update and usable in local and online Versus Mode. That’s a statement move-drop the series’ ultimate antagonist without a paywall-and it sets the stage for what comes next: the paid Infinity Castle Character Pass rolling out this autumn.
On paper, this is a smart split. Give everyone Muzan for free so the player base gets a fresh toy to lab, then sell a steady drip of Infinity Castle-themed fighters through the season. The paid pass includes seven character packs, with Kaigaku and Infinity Castle variants for Zenitsu and Tanjiro confirmed and more “others” to come. If you don’t want the whole pass, you can buy fighters individually—good for specialists who only need their main, not great if tier lists push multiple new must-picks.
Important detail: the update specifically calls out Versus availability for Muzan. Don’t expect Story Mode scenes or bespoke chapters tied to him—that’s not how this drop is positioned. This is about shaking up online and couch competition, not rewriting the narrative campaign.

I’ve been playing CC2’s anime arena fighters since the Storm days, and this is their sweet spot: faithful animation, big cinematic supers, and pick-up-and-play spectacle that still rewards lab time. Muzan being free is a crowd-pleaser, but the meta implications matter. If he ships overtuned—as series “final bosses” often do—ranked queues will look like a Muzan mirror festival until the first balance pass lands. The studio’s recent cadence of patches in Hinokami Chronicles 2 has been better than in the 2021 original, but let’s see how quickly they react once the community breaks him open.
The Infinity Castle Character Pass is also where the business model shows. Seven packs staggered through autumn keeps the game in the conversation while the anime/movies dominate timelines. That’s not inherently bad; it’s industry standard for licensed fighters now. The key question: will these be mere costume swaps with tweaked supers, or honest-to-goodness distinct kits that justify the buy-in? “Zenitsu (Infinity Castle)” and “Tanjiro (Infinity Castle)” could easily swing either way. If they’re substantial, I’m in. If they’re glorified variants, hard pass unless you’re a die-hard.

Hinokami Chronicles 2 launched with clear intent: continue the story arcs fans care about and strengthen Versus play with better matchmaking and balance. Muzan’s arrival is the kind of event character that keeps lobbies active while the DLC slate rolls out. If you bounced off the first game’s online scene, the sequel’s Versus improvements make a stronger case to dive back in—especially with a free top-tier draw in the roster.
From a community perspective, a free villain like Muzan also levels the playing field. No one is locked out of labbing counters because they didn’t buy a pass. That matters for ranked health and for grassroots tournaments testing the waters with this sequel. Where it could get dicey is if multiple Infinity Castle fighters land top tier and sit behind a paywall. We’ve seen this play out across the genre: when DLC defines the meta, “just buy it” becomes less an option and more a requirement to participate.

The sequel arrived in August 2025 across PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC. It builds on the original with a larger roster, story arcs pushing toward the Infinity Castle, and a Versus suite that’s simply more reliable than the 2021 entry. Today’s update doesn’t change Story Mode, but it does give every player a powerful new lab project—and a preview of the Infinity Castle focus that will define the game’s live content through the end of the year.
Muzan is free and playable in Versus right now, which is a win for everyone. The real spend is coming with the Infinity Castle Character Pass—seven paid packs starting this autumn, with individual buys if you only want your main. If CC2 nails balance and gives the “Infinity Castle” variants real mechanical identity, this could be the shot in the arm Hinokami Chronicles 2’s competitive scene needs. If not, it’s just another seasonal drip feed with a flashy headline.
