Keep the Game-Key Card inserted after installation. Downloading the game does not turn it into an independent digital copy: the card is required whenever you play. Before taking a new purchase somewhere without internet access, complete both the download and the first launch while connected.

What comes in a Game-Key Card box?
A standard retail purchase typically includes a Nintendo Switch 2 game case and a cartridge-shaped Game-Key Card. The card itself provides the license to download the associated game; that license is not a separate download code. The packaging identifies the required free storage space.
There are no game files on the card. Its familiar cartridge shape and retail case do not mean you can insert it and immediately start playing. Any additional contents, such as collector’s items or bonus codes, depend on the edition you buy.
What you need to download — and where it goes
Inserting the Game-Key Card prompts the Switch 2 to download the game through the HOME Menu. You need the complete base game, rather than a small activation file or an ordinary update. The files are stored on the console’s internal storage or a compatible microSD Express card.

Check the required free space on the packaging against your available storage before buying. There is no single download size for the format: it depends on the title. Updates and downloadable content can require additional space beyond the base installation. If you need expanded game storage, look specifically for microSD Express.
Internet access is required for the download and the first launch check. After that, games with offline play can generally run without a connection, provided the Game-Key Card remains inserted. Online multiplayer and other connected features still need internet access; completing the download does not make those functions available offline.
Game-Key Card versus cartridge versus download code
A retailer’s “physical” category can include very different products. Check which format the specific edition uses rather than relying on the box image alone.
| Feature | Full-data game card | Game-Key Card | Digital download code |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you receive | A cartridge containing game data | A physical cartridge containing the download key | A code, without a game cartridge |
| Base-game download | Not necessarily required; check the title’s download requirements | The complete game must be downloaded | The complete game must be downloaded |
| Local storage needed | Depends on additional downloads and updates | Enough for the full installation, plus any extras | Enough for the full installation, plus any extras |
| Physical card needed to play | Yes | Yes, including after installation | No; access uses the digital license |
Can you lend, resell or buy a used Game-Key Card?
Yes. Game-Key Cards are not tied to the purchaser’s Nintendo Account. You can lend or resell the card, and another Switch 2 can use it. The receiving console must have the game installed — or download it — and the card must be inserted to play.

A used card is therefore different from a previously redeemed download code. that said, keeping the downloaded files does not let the previous holder continue playing without the card. Likewise, borrowing one does not grant a permanent digital copy.
For collectors, the limitation is reinstallation: the card cannot supply the game files by itself. If those files need replacing, you depend on access to the download. A cartridge containing the complete game is the better fit when your priority is keeping the software itself on physical media.
Does Nintendo’s physical commitment guarantee full cartridges?
Nintendo Latin America vice president and general manager Bill van Zyll has said Nintendo has no plans to abandon physical games. Switch 2 supports both cartridges and digital downloads, but that commitment does not mean every boxed release contains game data. The format of the individual release remains the useful buying detail.
What to check before buying a boxed Switch 2 game
- Read the format label. Look for “Game-Key Card” and download notices on the packaging or listing. “Physical edition” alone does not tell you whether the game is stored on the cartridge.
- Match the storage requirement to your console. Allow room for the complete download and any updates or DLC you intend to install. Check that expansion storage is microSD Express.
- Plan the first play session around internet access. A sealed Game-Key Card purchase will not work straight from the box during an offline trip; download it and complete the first launch beforehand.
- Check the exact edition and region. Read its language, included-content and download information, especially when importing. Another edition’s product page may describe different contents.
- Choose according to what you want to keep. A Game-Key Card preserves lending and resale of the physical key. If you want the game files on the cartridge, look for a release that contains the complete game and check for additional-download requirements.
