Nioh 3’s Hell Rising DLC Brings Edo 1651 and Its Toughest Test Yet

Hell Rising is structured around the endgame rather than a short narrative detour. Its most consequential addition is “Enlightened One’s Journey,” a new difficulty layer arriving alongside challenge content connected to the Hundred Demon Realms. Team NINJA has not detailed the mode’s rules, but its placement makes the intended audience clear: players with established builds and an appetite for repeated high-risk encounters.

The DLC moves Takechiyo to Edo in 1651, during the Keian era, after an unknown yokai leads him there through his dreams. This version of Edo has been overtaken by the Crucible, turning the historical setting into a new hellish stage rather than a conventional period backdrop. Takechiyo will encounter new yokai and powerful opponents, including the one-eyed swordsman Yagyū Jūbei.

Combat additions include hoko-and-shield weapon types, including a shinobi variation. The design emphasis appears to be on combining offense and defense, potentially giving players more controlled options than pure aggression when facing unfamiliar bosses and challenge runs. Exact movesets, scaling, rewards, and loot changes remain unannounced, so it is premature to rebuild a character around a presumed new meta. Keeping flexible armor, accessories, and crafting materials available is the more useful preparation.

Hell Rising is included in Nioh 3’s Season Pass and is the first of two planned expansions; the second is titled Bloody Insurrection. That makes the pass a straightforward choice for players already committed to both releases. Players interested chiefly in the Edo story or one weapon category can reasonably wait for launch details and early balance information before buying in.

Before August 19, prioritize survivability, resource recovery, and adaptable status coverage over a narrowly tuned damage build; those fundamentals should carry furthest into Enlightened One’s Journey and the Hundred Demon Realms.
