Once Human’s Isles of Abyss Makes Your Base a Weapon at Sea

Once Human’s October 2026 Isles of Abyss expansion adds ocean exploration, mobile Sea Fortress building and sea-based PvE across PC, mobile, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Once Human began as a free-to-play PC survival game in 2024 and passed 30 million cumulative users before its console launch. Isles of Abyss is a far more fundamental shift than a standard seasonal map: its October 2026 update moves the survival anchor from a fixed land house to a mobile base that must remain seaworthy, supplied and armed.

Raft first, sea fortress later

The new construction path starts with a wooden raft, then expands into an Exclusive Sea Fortress: a customizable maritime base capable of carrying cannons and other combat tools. That changes the resource equation. Early materials are no longer just for a defensible home; they determine mobility, firepower and how safely a crew can attempt longer crossings.

Build choices have direct consequences. Cannons improve damage output but reduce a ship’s speed, making evasion harder. Ship orientation also matters, since changing the vessel’s angle can create a firing line for cannon shots. Land runs feed sea voyages with resources, while successful voyages accelerate land-side progress — an intended loop rather than two separate activities.

Five ocean regions and threats that stop the journey

Isles of Abyss spans scattered islands, the ocean surface and deep-sea areas, with five sea regions built around distinct climates and scenery. Dynamic weather and day-night conditions add pressure to route planning. The major PvE threats include ghost ships, mechanical behemoths and towering sea creatures, putting danger on travel routes instead of limiting it to static base defense.

The Calamity Tower encounter shows the more tactical end of that design. Tentacles must be destroyed before the core can be damaged, while a horn-like component can trigger extreme weather and a water tornado if left standing. A fully upgraded cannon speeds up the tentacle phase and reduces monster intelligence when its shots connect. If friends join the challenge, every participant receives the same rewards.

Combat and much of the loot loop take place on the surface despite underwater exploration, and players who exhaust cannon ammunition must reach an island before relying on personal weapons. Console players enter that loop with cross-play and cross-progression; PS5 adds DualSense haptics, while Xbox Game Pass members receive launch perks. The verdict: Isles of Abyss is the strongest reason yet to return, provided players treat ship upgrades and supplies as progression essentials rather than cosmetic extras.
