Sasaki Ganryu goes down fastest when you treat the fight as a stamina-break duel: parry his committed sword attacks, take only two hits after each opening, and convert his depleted stamina into Break Issen. His delayed slash and multi-hit thrust string are designed to catch players who attack or parry too early. Gioh/Form uses the same loop later on, but tentacle grabs and positional Break Issen targets demand cleaner spacing.

Use the stamina loop instead of racing Ganryu’s health
Ganryu is the first major boss at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and the encounter teaches the system that carries through later boss fights: reduce the enemy’s stamina with clean defensive reads, then capitalize on the Break Issen opening. Raw attacks help, but well-timed parries and deflections drain stamina much more efficiently.
- Hold guard until the strike is committed, then tap Attack at impact for your parry timing.
- Use parries against direct sword swings; they create the most reliable route toward a stamina break.
- Dodge red-glow attacks, kicks, and grabs. These are poor parry targets and will punish an attempted deflect.
- Attack twice after a successful parry, then disengage. Ganryu can parry a third hit and immediately steal back momentum.
- Reset at mid-range and wait for another committed attack. Let him come to you instead of chasing his recovery.
The trap is holding guard for too long. Guarding absorbs pressure, but it also consumes Musashi’s stamina. Use it to survive the early hits of a string or to wait for a parryable strike; do not remain locked in block while Ganryu is passive.
Read Sasaki Ganryu’s key attacks
Phase 1 gives Ganryu wider parry timing on his straightforward katana attacks. Use it to learn the visual cue: watch the sword arm and wait for the blade to begin its actual forward path. His body language can pause or drift before the hit; the sword’s commitment is the signal that matters.
| Ganryu attack | What to watch for | Reliable response |
|---|---|---|
| Quick piercing strike | Blade comes forward in a fast, direct lunge. | Parry at contact, land two attacks, then create space. |
| Delayed wave-like slash | Ganryu hesitates and draws the katana through a wide arc before finally releasing the swing. | Wait through the hesitation. Parry only when the swing starts moving toward Musashi. |
| Multi-hit thrust string | A sequence of rapid pierces with a more readable final thrust. | Block the first two hits, then parry the last thrust at the last moment. |
| Jumping kick | Ganryu leaves the ground for an unarmed kick. | Dodge instead of trying to parry. A clean dodge can contribute toward your Reflex meter. |
| Red-glow attack or grab | His weapon or body flashes red, or he reaches in with a grab animation. | Dodge through or away from it. Trying to parry these attacks costs too much health and stamina. |
The multi-hit thrust is the fight’s biggest timing check. Trying to parry every pierce makes the string harder than it needs to be and drains your guard stamina when you miss. Stabilize with block on the first two hits, then take the final thrust as your parry opportunity. That last hit has the clearest timing and gives you a safe two-hit punish.

Phase 2: follow the two-hit rule
Ganryu speeds up in Phase 2 and adds more delayed pressure. Keep the same plan rather than trying to out-combo him. Parry a committed sword strike, hit twice, disengage. The third attack is where Ganryu can counter-parry, turning a successful defensive read into a damaging reversal.
- Do not swing through his hesitation animations. The delayed slash exists to bait an early parry or a panic attack.
- Do not spend Oni Armaments for minor Phase 1 chip damage. Save them for a phase transition, an emergency finish, or a moment when Ganryu is already vulnerable.
- Absorb souls only in a safe gap after Ganryu has completed a string. Soul absorption is manual, and using it during pressure can leave Musashi exposed.
- If Ganryu becomes passive, take one quick strike at most and return to your spacing. Forcing openings usually gives him the better exchange.
Ganryu appears twice during the campaign: first as the early human sword duel, then later after fusing with a Genma form by absorbing many souls. The later fight asks for the same discipline. Preserve the parry-first rhythm, dodge the attacks that do not suit a parry response, and avoid extended strings after any successful punish.
Trigger Break Issen before the opening disappears
Break Issen is the reward for controlling the stamina gauge. Ganryu becomes eligible when his stamina is below 30%, but the reliable execution state comes from pushing him into exhaustion while maintaining your parry sequence. The practical setup is two consecutive clean parries within five seconds while he is entering an attack wind-up.
- Keep Ganryu close once his stamina is low; do not drift so far away that you cannot reach the prompt.
- Parry two readable sword attacks in quick succession instead of gambling on a delayed slash.
- When he loses balance, press Attack near him to begin Break Issen.
- Select the highlighted target area and confirm the prompted attack to deliver the body-part strike.
- After the execution, back away rather than adding a long combo. Bosses retaliate hard when the special-strike window ends.
For Ganryu, choose the damage-focused Break Issen result when he is close to defeat. If you need resources heading into the next stretch, take the soul-focused result instead. Either way, the execution is a major boss-damage tool rather than an instant kill, so you still need to resume the parry loop afterward.
How to handle Gioh/Form’s tentacles and Break Issen targets
Gioh/Form is a later stamina-break encounter with a larger body, tentacle pressure, and more positional Break Issen opportunities. Ganryu tests whether you can recognize a sword swing; Gioh/Form tests whether you can separate safe parry targets from attacks whose wide hitboxes should be avoided.

- Parry committed limb slams and direct core strikes. These are the attacks worth using to build stamina damage.
- Dodge tentacle grabs and long whip-like sweeps. Their range and angle make them unreliable parry attempts.
- Fight at a distance where the full limb animation is visible. Standing directly under the body makes it harder to identify whether a tentacle is slamming, sweeping, or reaching to grab.
- Use the low-stamina phase to hunt readable attacks. Once the gauge drops below 30%, look for two clean parries inside five seconds rather than forcing damage with repeated attacks.
- Choose the vital body segment shown by the Break Issen prompt. The boss execution is positional, so move into range of the highlighted segment before confirming the strike.
Gioh/Form punishes greedy follow-ups more sharply than Ganryu’s early tutorial phase. After every Break Issen, reset to a clear viewing distance and wait for the next committed limb attack. That spacing keeps tentacle grabs from turning a successful stamina break into an immediate counterattack.
Prepare your consumables and controls before either fight
Musashi can carry six consumables at once. If the item you need is in storage, visit a shrine and use the storehouse before starting the encounter; it cannot be swapped during the fight. Red souls are plentiful enough to support charm upgrades over the campaign, but charm capacity rises gradually from one equipped charm early on to two in the midgame and three later.
If the default controls make parry timing awkward, switch between the aggressive and defensive layouts in the options menu before retrying. In the defensive layout, guard is assigned to the left bumper, while one-handed attack uses Square/X, two-handed attack uses Triangle/Y, and evade uses Circle/B. A consistent guard-and-attack rhythm matters more here than changing weapons or attempting every combat mechanic at once.
Against both bosses, the clean reset is the same: parry the committed attacks, dodge grabs and red-glow moves, take two hits only, and spend the stamina break on Break Issen before backing out again.
