French indie studio Game Atelier is swapping 2D for fully 3D in Otherskin, a sci-fi third-person shooter slated for PC release in autumn 2025 and headed to consoles soon after. You step into the armored boots of Alex, a stranded Space Crusader who survives by absorbing and wielding alien abilities. Best known for Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, Game Atelier has embraced Unreal Engine 5 to craft Otherskin’s diverse alien biomes. Drawing inspiration from genre classics—Metroid’s methodical exploration, Returnal’s kinetic combat, and Tomb Raider’s acrobatic traversal—the team builds hostile forests with pulsating flora, crystalline caverns aglow with bioluminescence, and deserted research outposts rife with audio logs and holographic echoes. Moody lighting, dynamic physics, and a minimalist heads-up display amplify the sense of discovery and danger.
Central to Otherskin’s design is the Morph System: rather than accruing every ability indiscriminately, you unlock a bespoke set of powers in each self-contained level. Abilities range from phasing through solid barriers and creating energy-chain lightning arcs to summoning gravity wells and cloaking in shadows. Enemy design ranges from nimble skulkers to hulking brutes and aerial drones, each demanding distinct Morph and weapon strategies. Transitioning from a bespoke 2D pipeline to Unreal Engine 5 represents a major technical milestone.
