A four-hour preview can expose weak combat. Even a nearly 10-hour session cannot establish how an entire campaign holds together. Phantom Blade Zero’s hands-on builds sit within that range, making them useful evidence of S-Game’s fighting systems but a limited test of pacing, progression and repetition. That distinction matters more than the volume of praise.

The weapon differences matter more than the weapon count
The strongest part of Phantom Blade Zero’s pitch has survived the move from footage to playable encounters: fast, choreographed melee with fluid transitions and a convincing sense of impact. Since its 2023 announcement, the obvious test has been whether those cinematic fights would remain compelling under player control. The hands-on builds give that proposition substance.
The full game is expected to feature roughly 30 primary weapons, with distinct animations, combos and special abilities. Preview sessions included around 10. Those weapons changed how encounters were approached, rather than simply changing damage values or the appearance of an attack.
That is the more useful detail. A large arsenal creates depth only when its differences produce meaningful decisions. Distinct movesets can give players reasons to adapt to an encounter; a large inventory of functionally similar weapons cannot. The remaining test is whether progression keeps those choices relevant across the campaign.
The presentation supports that combat identity. Detailed clothing, natural environments, water effects and cinematic camera work accompany smooth performance in the preview builds. Motion-captured martial arts give exchanges continuity, helping the action read as a sustained fight rather than disconnected animations. Those results apply to the demonstrated builds, without establishing performance across every eventual hardware configuration.

Bosses expose the campaign’s main pressure point
The Lion Dance boss is a concrete example of the game’s strengths: surprising attacks, elaborate animation and spectacle tied to mechanical challenge. Distinctive boss encounters give the combat a setting in which its choreography and weapon systems can do substantial work.
Ordinary encounters have not consistently reached those same highs in hands-on sessions. This is the uncomfortable limitation beneath the polished demonstrations. Most of a campaign happens between its headline fights, so encounter variety and enemy combinations will determine how frequently the combat produces meaningful decisions.
Exploration follows broad, largely linear environments with side paths and optional distractions. That structure gives S-Game room to control pacing while allowing departures from the main route. Its value depends on what those departures contain and how they connect to progression — areas that a selected preview route cannot fully resolve.
A possible disc release is a poor basis for a digital preorder
Physical-edition reports introduce a separate purchasing issue. The edition information described in the supplied material concerns digital versions and digital Deluxe extras. It does not establish a boxed release, nor does it establish that a disc version will never happen.

The suggestion that players can preorder digitally, cancel later and switch to a physical copy rests on two separate conditions: a physical edition becoming available and the original purchase remaining eligible for cancellation. Neither condition should be treated as an automatic part of the transaction.
Preorder cancellations have been reported, but cancellation guidance does not demonstrate a wave of processed refunds or a change in S-Game’s release plans. Refund eligibility follows the rules of the store handling the purchase, including Steam, PlayStation Store or Epic Games Store. A buyer’s ability to cancel one order cannot establish another buyer’s entitlement on a different platform.
The next useful evidence is specific
For the game, the decisive next test is sustained campaign play: ordinary encounters, weapon progression and optional routes evaluated alongside the bosses. For disc buyers, it is a publisher announcement or a concrete retailer listing specifying the physical package. Anyone considering a digital preorder while waiting for that package should inspect their chosen store’s cancellation conditions before purchasing. A possible future disc edition supplies no refund guarantee.
