Physint isn’t dead—Xbox just replaced PlayStation as publisher

ethan Smith4 min read
Xbox will publish Hideo Kojima’s action-espionage game Physint after PlayStation Studios ended its collaboration with Kojima Productions in mid-June 2026.

The immediate result is continuity rather than a restart. Physint remains in development at Kojima Productions, with Xbox replacing PlayStation as its publishing partner after a roughly three-month search for new backing. That preserves Hideo Kojima’s return to the action-espionage genre associated with Metal Gear, but it leaves the game’s eventual platform lineup completely open.

What changes today

The cleanest player-facing update is simple: the publisher changed, not the project itself. Xbox is now backing Physint on the publishing side, while Kojima Productions says development continues. Xbox announced the new arrangement on September 9, and Kojima Productions confirmed the following day that Physint would continue with Xbox. Xbox has also said its wider relationship with the studio will extend into film and television, though no specific Physint screen project has been announced.

What has not changed today is just as important. There is still no confirmed release date, no public platform list, no pricing, no store pages, and no announcement about editions, Game Pass, cloud support, or a PC version. So while the headline is dramatic, the practical change for players right now is a partner swap, not a full reveal of where or when they will actually play the game.

Sony stepped away publicly; Kojima describes an earlier cancellation notice

Physint was introduced in January 2024 as a next-generation action-espionage project connected to Sony Interactive Entertainment. Kojima Productions says PlayStation Studios notified the team in mid-June 2026 that it would cancel the project. Sony has described its move differently, saying it made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating while retaining a strong relationship with Kojima Productions. Either way, Sony is no longer the project’s publishing-side partner.

That distinction matters because it clarifies what players should take from the shake-up. This does not read like a public announcement that the game itself is gone. It reads like a breakdown in the original publishing arrangement, followed by Kojima Productions finding a new company to keep the project moving.

What Xbox backing does and does not tell players yet

The deal extends an existing relationship built around OD, Kojima’s horror project for Xbox. It also keeps alive Kojima’s much-hyped return to action-espionage, a label that naturally invites comparisons to Metal Gear Solid. But the new partnership does not come with any fresh gameplay specifics. There are still no confirmed combat details, stealth systems, cast announcements, mission structure breakdowns, or technical details attached to the Xbox-published version of Physint.

For players, “Xbox-published” does not yet mean Xbox exclusive. Kojima Productions and Xbox have not named consoles, confirmed a PC version, or set a release date. There are also no gameplay systems, cast details, pricing plans, editions, or storefront listings attached to the new partnership. That keeps the platform question wide open, even if the game has clearly moved away from its original PlayStation association.

The next announcements that matter

The next meaningful update will be a platform list and release window, followed by the first substantive look at how Physint translates Kojima’s action-espionage promise into a game. Until then, the biggest confirmed takeaway is straightforward: Physint survived Sony’s exit from the collaboration, and it now moves forward with Xbox as its publisher.
