Physint’s Xbox Move Is Bigger Than a Lost PlayStation Exclusive

Xbox Game Studios will publish Hideo Kojima’s action-espionage game Physint after PlayStation Studios ended its collaboration in mid-June 2026.

Physint has lost the PlayStation backing it was introduced with in 2024, but it has not lost its production path. Kojima Productions kept work moving after PlayStation Studios sent its cancellation notice in mid-June 2026, then spent three months finding a replacement publisher. Xbox Game Studios is now funding and publishing the project.

The change matters because Physint was positioned as a major new PlayStation-associated original IP: an action-espionage game designed to blend cinematic presentation with interactive play. Hideo Kojima conceived it after illness during the pandemic and hearing continued demand for something in the spirit of Metal Gear. It is not a Metal Gear Solid revival, however; Physint remains a separate Kojima Productions property.

PlayStation described its exit as a difficult decision to step away from collaborating on Physint, while saying it intends to work with Kojima Productions in another form in the future. That leaves the studio’s broader relationship with Sony intact, but ends Sony’s publishing role on this specific game. Kojima said Physint was still in development when the notice arrived and will continue under Xbox.

For Xbox, the agreement expands an existing relationship rather than starting one from scratch. Kojima Productions’ horror project OD remains tied to Xbox, and the companies have described their new collaboration as extending beyond games into film and television. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma called it an honor to work with Kojima Productions on Physint.

The practical outcome for players is not yet a confirmed Xbox exclusive. Physint’s console platforms, PC plans, cloud support, engine, release date, price, and IP ownership have not been announced. Kojima had previously indicated the game was likely five or six years away as of 2025, while casting, scans, and performance-capture work are set to begin in late 2026.

Next, watch for Xbox’s first platform listing and a revised production timeline — details that will determine whether Physint becomes an Xbox exclusive, a multiplatform release, or something between those models.
