Pokémon’s Facial-Scan Store Rule Makes Every Japan TCG Visit a One-Shot Entry

The operational change is stricter than a normal purchase cap: access itself is now tied to the individual shopper. Anyone planning to visit one of the affected Pokémon Card Store pop-ups should treat the trip as a single, uninterrupted shopping session rather than a flexible stop with the option to return later.

The facial-recognition system applies at five temporary stores in Natori, Chōfu, Higashiura, Hiroshima-Fuchū, and Chikushino, operating from July 31 through August 16 for the Storm Emerald Mega release window. Customers of elementary-school age and older must complete a scan before entering or receiving a numbered queue ticket. Each person is limited to one entry and one ticket per day; a repeat scan or ticket attempt can trigger an alert and a refusal of entry.

That structure targets the methods used to extract extra stock from limited retail supply: repeat visits, duplicate queue positions, and coordinated line activity. Pokémon describes the system as part of a safe and secure shopping environment and an effort to prevent crime while enforcing store rules. It follows earlier use of government-issued ID checks for some purchases at official Japanese outlets.

For ordinary buyers, the practical restrictions matter most around exits and group shopping. Customers who leave without first notifying staff may not be permitted to re-enter that day, even if they have not completed a purchase. Buyers cannot assume they can make a second run for a friend, return later for a gift, or obtain another ticket after leaving. The relevant person must be present for their own scan; a family group does not create extra access for one shopper.

Preschool children are exempt from scanning but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The published rules do not outline a general appeal route, alternative verification method, or disability exception. Families or visitors who may have difficulty completing a facial scan should contact the venue before travelling rather than expect an undocumented workaround at the door.

The immediate point to watch is whether this remains limited to these five pop-ups or becomes a wider model for Pokémon’s Japanese retail operations as scalping pressure persists.
