Polyarc is closing, and Moss owners should do these 5 things now

Quill’s story is not being removed from players’ libraries, but its future has become sharply limited. Polyarc has not issued a shutdown notice for Moss, Moss: Book II, or July’s Moss: The Forgotten Relic; installed copies should remain playable as long as their platforms continue to support them. What ends is the Seattle studio’s ability to make the next chapter, expansion, or unscheduled fix.

What ends on September 11

Polyarc confirmed it is winding down active development and closing after nearly 12 years. The closure takes effect September 11, 2026, and affects 29 employees, including co-founders Chris Alderson and Danny Bulla and CEO Tam Armstrong. The studio has also published a hiring spreadsheet and contact details intended to help other teams recruit affected staff.

The end follows a difficult 2026. Polyarc cut two-thirds of its workforce in March after a cancelled major project and an unsuccessful effort to secure new financing. Its final release, Moss: The Forgotten Relic, arrived July 16 as a traditional non-VR compilation of Moss, Book II, and The Twilight Garden. It brought the series’ story beyond headsets to PC and console. Launch coverage listed PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, while the original games remain defined by their VR format: players guide Quill while also using VR touch controls to manipulate the storybook world around her.

No sequel, no promised support window, no backup plan

No successor, buyer, or ongoing support partner for the Moss IP has been announced. That leaves future patches, DLC, compatibility work, and any sequel dependent on a new rights-holder or arrangement that does not yet exist. Polyarc also has not announced a patch roadmap or future support window for Moss or Moss: Book II. The same uncertainty hangs over Polyarc’s VR PvP spin-off, Glassbreakers: Champions of Moss.

That does not mean the single-player games are suddenly disappearing. There is no player-facing shutdown notice for Moss, Moss: Book II, or Moss: The Forgotten Relic. As things stand now, existing installs, store entitlements, and already released builds should keep working on supported platforms. The immediate loss is future development, not current ownership.

What Moss owners should do right now

This is now a preservation story as much as a shutdown story. If you own any part of Quill’s adventure, these are the practical steps worth taking now rather than later:

• Back up saves where your platform allows it. Keep local or cloud save data for Moss, Moss: Book II, and Moss: The Forgotten Relic intact, especially if you are midway through a playthrough.
• Confirm your entitlements are tied to the right storefront account. Make sure your purchases for Moss, Book II, and The Forgotten Relic are attached to the PlayStation, Steam, or other platform account you still use.
• Download any available updates now. If your platform is still showing pending patches or optional downloads for Moss, Moss: Book II, or Moss: The Forgotten Relic, grab them while everything is still straightforward.
• Preserve your VR setup for the original games. Moss and Moss: Book II were built for VR, so keeping the headset, controllers, and platform software that already run your current builds matters more now that no replacement support path has been announced.
• Use The Forgotten Relic as the no-headset fallback. If long-term VR access is the part that worries you, Polyarc’s last release is the cleanest contingency plan because it reworks the core story into a non-VR format on PC and console.

What players should not do is assume their libraries are about to evaporate overnight. Nothing public points to that for the single-player Moss games. The sharper reality is smaller and sadder: Quill’s existing adventures should remain yours, but the studio that made them is done making more.
