PS5 Box Warnings Explain What “Digital-Only From 2028” Means
The decisive detail is the release date, not the date a player buys a PS5. Sony’s new packaging notice applies to newly released PlayStation games from January 2028; it does not disable the disc drive or invalidate an existing PS5 and PS4 disc library.
The notice appearing on some disc-based PS5 boxes states that newly released games will be sold through the PlayStation Store and retailers in digital format only from January 2028. It also says discs for games released before that point can continue to be played on the console. That makes the label a warning about the future supply of new physical releases, rather than an expiration date for discs already on shelves, in collections, or on the second-hand market.
This matters most to buyers choosing a disc-capable console for lending, resale, collecting, or reduced reliance on digital storefront access. A physical copy released before the cutoff should still follow the normal process: insert the disc, install the game data, and use the disc as the ownership check. That remains conditional on having a working compatible disc drive, an undamaged supported disc, and any title-specific login, server, patch, or download requirements. A disc does not automatically guarantee fully offline access.

Packaging is also not proof that a particular game includes playable media. Publishers can offer a digital launch, a later limited physical run, or editions with different contents. Buyers who want a durable physical copy should check the exact product listing and edition for “disc,” rather than assuming a retail box contains one. “Download code in box” and “digital only” are materially different products for resale and long-term access.
For games launching before January 2028, confirmed disc editions remain the clearest option. For releases after that cutoff, Sony’s policy removes new PlayStation disc production; the practical issue is whether publishers make edition details and online-dependency requirements clear before purchase.
