PS5 Pro Stock Has Vanished—Why Paying $1,300 Is the Wrong Move

A $1,300 PS5 Pro is a $400 scalper premium, not the console’s new normal. Sony’s 2TB, digital-only machine carries a US MSRP of $899.99, yet late-August demand emptied PlayStation Direct and major retail channels just as excitement around Grand Theft Auto 6 intensified.

Amazon, Walmart and eBay listings can make the console look available, but buyers need to check who is fulfilling the order. Much of the remaining stock is coming from third-party marketplace sellers rather than the retailers themselves, with new units reaching roughly $1,299 to $1,300. That is about 44% above list price for hardware that has no confirmed nationwide restock date.

The rush reflects a premium-console bet on GTA 6. The PS5 Pro is the most powerful console currently available, and buyers are treating it as the safest choice for the best possible visual and performance settings when Rockstar’s next game arrives. A 60fps option for GTA 6 still looks unlikely, but expectations of 30fps on base PS5 hardware have made the Pro more attractive to players who want the strongest available version.

PlayStation Direct should be the first place to monitor: it was the last major US retailer offering new PS5 Pro units at MSRP before stock disappeared. Best Buy is also worth checking for store-specific open-box or returned units, some of which have appeared near or below list price. Target and Walmart require extra caution because marketplace offers can be mistaken for retailer stock.

Use $899.99 as the baseline and treat any listing more than 10% above it as a convenience purchase, not fair value. Buyers who need physical games should also remember that the Pro is digital-only and requires a separately purchased disc drive. The next GTA 6 marketing beat or a PlayStation Direct replenishment is the moment to watch, since fresh stock could disappear quickly.
