Sometimes a new game catches your attention not because it promises some huge genre revolution, but because it smashes together two undeniably addictive things and somehow makes it work. That’s what happened when I read about Raccoin, Doraccoon’s upcoming roguelike that merges the tactile thrill of arcade coin pushers with the dizzying, multiplicative chaos that made Balatro an instant indie favorite. No release date yet, but with an open playtest coming August 18, I’m already itching to get my grubby raccoon paws into this one.
I’ll say it: the coin pusher is peak arcade mind-game. If you’ve ever stood staring at those shimmering heaps behind the glass, you know the feeling—just one more coin, just one more push, and that windfall is yours. Usually though, you’re just burning tokens (or, let’s be real, your allowance) for a shot at pocket change and a snapped-off plastic spider ring. But Raccoin is no quarter-eater in disguise. It rips the anticipation and chain-reaction joy out of those machines, then stuffs it inside a modern roguelike’s systems-driven madness.
If you played Balatro, you’ve seen the formula: every run is a dizzying escalation, multipliers layering up until the score numbers almost wrap around. Raccoin channels that “just-one-more-run” spirit, but gives it a physical edge. Every dropped coin has weight, placement, and unpredictable knock-on effects. Imagine carefully stacking bonuses, setting off a TNT Coin that explodes the arrangement and suddenly, the whole board’s in chaos—just the way I want it.

The real hook here is the coin abilities. We’re not just talking passive stat boosts. Water Coins grow money trees, TNT Coins blast everything sky-high, Cat and Rat Coins trigger mini-chases for bonus loot. Each run lets you build weird synergies—a black hole effect that warps the board, or extra shakes (arcade purists cringe) to force last-second miracles. Doraccoon’s blending of physical and numerical chaos shows genuine understanding of why arcade games keep us hooked, but also why we obsessively come back to games with strong meta-progression.
On top of that, character choice adds spice. The raccoon manager apparently craves mathematical madness and high-score pursuit, while the biologist builds crazy animal synergies. That’s right in line with roguelike tradition—each character is a new puzzle, a new way to break the game if you’re clever. As someone who loves wringing every bizarre combo out of games like Slay the Spire or Hades, this raises my expectations. The real test: will the coin powers feel genuinely different run-to-run, or will it all blur into gimmicks after a few hours? That’s what I’ll be looking for in the playtest.
Let’s be honest: plenty of games are scrambling to follow Balatro’s formula right now, and most will get lost in the shuffle. But Raccoin’s concept feels more than skin-deep. The partnership with Playstack, Balatro’s publisher, means there’s a real shot at a polished, attention-grabbing debut. The retro-arcade twist isn’t just cosmetic—if done right, it could make for a uniquely tactile, kinetic take on the “numbers go brrrrr” phenomenon plaguing my sleep schedule since Balatro dropped.
Still, I’m keeping some healthy skepticism. Roguelikes live and die on replay value and mechanical depth. Just tossing in a jumble of coin effects won’t be enough if there aren’t genuinely challenging decisions and a feeling of control over your board state. If Raccoin can deliver those “a-ha!” synergies that let clever players break the system (without getting stale after a dozen runs), it could earn a place alongside genre heavyweights.
Raccoin’s fusion of arcade nostalgia and roguelike number-mania is shaping up to be more than just a Balatro wannabe. With wild coin powers, distinct characters, and an open playtest on August 18, it has every chance of cracking the code—and my willpower. Here’s hoping it has the depth to keep us hooked after the novelty fades.
