Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 hit Switch 2 in October—but cartridges wait until 2027

Capcom is filling the biggest Resident Evil hole in Nintendo’s current catalogue on October 16, 2026. Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition will launch digitally for Nintendo Switch 2 as native RE Engine releases, with physical editions delayed until January 29, 2027.

The date matters more than the trailer. Switch players have spent years navigating cloud versions and compromised ports while Capcom’s modern Resident Evil run lived elsewhere. These are the remakes people mean when they talk about the series’ recent resurgence, arriving on Switch 2 with their meaningful post-launch content attached. The catch is familiar: digital buyers get the full experience first, while collectors get to wait more than three months for a box whose cartridge and download requirements remain unspecified.

October 16 is the date; the editions decide the value

The three releases are not packaged identically, and that distinction is where Capcom’s “complete” framing needs reading carefully.

GameSwitch 2 editionDigital releaseIncluded contentUK price / pre-order price
Resident Evil 2Deluxe EditionOctober 16, 2026Base game and previously released DLC£34.99 / £26.24
Resident Evil 3Standard releaseOctober 16, 2026Base game; no specific DLC bundle has been named£24.99 / £16.49
Resident Evil 4Gold EditionOctober 16, 2026Base game, Separate Ways, and the Extra DLC Pack£44.99 / £35.99

The pre-order discounts run through October 15. That puts Resident Evil 3 at £16.49, Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition at £26.24, and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition at £35.99. Those are sensible launch prices for games that have been broadly available on other platforms for years, particularly because the higher-priced editions avoid charging Switch 2 owners again for core expansions.

Resident Evil 4 is the cleanest purchase. Gold Edition includes Separate Ways, the Ada Wong campaign that materially expands the remake rather than functioning as throwaway cosmetic ballast. Resident Evil 2 also brings its prior DLC through the Deluxe Edition. Resident Evil 3, however, has been announced as the base remake, without a named DLC package. Buyers expecting trilogy-wide parity should not assume it.

Native versions are the real correction

The important technical detail is that these are native Switch 2 versions, not cloud streams. That should be the baseline in 2026, but Capcom’s history on Nintendo hardware makes it worth stating plainly. A cloud icon on a Resident Evil listing has become a warning label for players who want portable horror without a dependable internet connection.

Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 target 60 frames per second on Switch 2. Capcom has yet to attach the same performance target to Resident Evil 4, which is the most demanding of the three remakes and the one that needs the closest scrutiny before release. Frame-rate targets are useful; final image quality, stability, and handheld performance are the part that determines whether these ports belong beside the stronger console versions or merely function.

The broader platform strategy is now clear. Older Switch releases of Resident Evil 1, 5, and 6 remain playable through backward compatibility, while the remake trilogy gets native Switch 2 treatment. Alongside newer series entries such as Resident Evil Requiem and Resident Evil Veronica, Capcom is finally treating Nintendo’s newer hardware as a serious Resident Evil destination rather than a side shelf for legacy ports.

The physical delay needs more detail than Capcom has provided

January 29, 2027 is the physical date for all three games. Capcom has not confirmed whether those releases use full game cartridges, game-key cards, or cartridges that still require substantial downloads. It also has not announced a retail “Remake Trilogy” package, despite the three games being regularly grouped together.

That omission is the uncomfortable part of an otherwise straightforward announcement. A January physical release is only meaningfully better for preservation-minded buyers if the cartridge contains a playable game. “Physical” has become flexible marketing language across the industry, and Switch 2 buyers have good reason to wait for packaging details before treating the January editions as the definitive versions.

Buy now only if the format works for you

  • Buy digitally on October 16 if portable access to the native remakes matters more than owning a cartridge.
  • Choose Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition if Separate Ways is essential; it is included from day one.
  • Take the October 15 pre-order price only if the listed discount beats the value of waiting for launch performance coverage.
  • Wait until January 29 if physical ownership is the priority, then confirm the cartridge format before buying.
  • Hold off on Resident Evil 3 if a DLC-inclusive edition is the deciding factor. Capcom has not identified one for Switch 2.

The practical move is simple: digital players can buy the edition that matches their preferred game on October 16, with Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition offering the most complete package. Physical collectors should wait for cartridge disclosures, not merely the January date. Capcom has supplied the games; it still needs to explain what the boxed versions actually preserve.
